Day 19 : Tuesday 24 September 2019 : Portofino We wandered into the heart of Santa Margherita, and thought about bussing it to Portofino, but decided by the time we worked it out, we could already be there. Besides, it’s another beautiful day in the land of Italy and the sun is shining off the water. Okay, long walk, but so worth it. Paraggi Bay on the way to Portofino was magnificent and should never be missed. If I had to do it over, its definitely worth a swim…just dive on in. Never seen such inviting water, so deep, calm and clear azure blue. You just want to jump in. We decided we would swim on the way back, but you should never wait, take the moment! Magnificent walk over the hill and through the trees ... read more

Our last hiking day takes us to Portofino, probably the most anticipated village for both Ralf and I, but not before we make our longest hike yet from Rocco to San Fruttuoso and then on to Portofino. Maybe it was just because it was such a long hike, but there were honestly times in the last few hours where I questioned if we'd accidentally missed a turn-off and taken a longer route because it took so long to actually see Portofino. In the end, we were on the right path all along and eventually we did make it to Portofino. The only unfortunate thing about the day was Portofino was a bit of a disappointment (more on that later) but it was a amazing hike, despite the strenuous terrain. Rewind....to start the day we took the ... read more

We have three options for travelling from Rapallo to Portofino, car, bus and ferry boat. The BBA V1 in 2009 while passing through the area decided to try and drive to Portofino on a sunny Sunday early afternoon and got turned around by a severe looking policewoman a couple of kilometres from the small village. She had told us that ‘Portofino was full’ which we really didn’t appreciate at the time as we had no idea how big the place was and how much parking was available. After that attempt the car has been ruled out. When we arrived in Rapallo yesterday the guy who let us in to the apartment told us about a ferry service option that we hadn’t realised was available and this sounded like a much more pleasurable option over a bus ... read more

Today is our last day staying at Riomaggiore. We decided to spend it by visiting Portofino since Mum has woven a tapestry of it in our house. It also has a reputation of being a beautiful place. The weather was cloudy and not that warm when we left but further north and west proved very warm despite the cloud as the day went on. We took the 80min train ride to Santa Margherita and walked to Portofino along the coastal boardwalk and hill path into the town. The area here is distinctively meditteranean with mansions on the hills, palm trees and other tropical plants, people sunbathing on the small beaches, clear water, and small and large boats. There are boats and buses that can be used between the towns but the walk was lovely with few ... read more

We arrived at Rapallo late in the afternoon after a pretty wet drive. The campsite was nothing flash but it was the closest one to Portofino and we could catch a bus there. It was really hilly country with lots of steep, narrow and windy roads, apart from the autostrada which tunnels straight through the hills and spans the valleys. I’ve got to say that there are similarities between the Italians and the Chinese when it comes to driving and it seems that fortune favours the brave, not that we came anywhere near an accident, it just seems chaotic. The next morning we were hoping that the ‘one fine, one wet, one fine, one wet’ weather pattern would continue and give us a fine day, and we weren’t disappointed. After finding out that the buses ... read more

This is where I went to finish of the PADI diving course......wasn't keen on doing the open water dives in the UK. This place is on the Italian Riviera, a short bus ride from Portofina. Beautiful town, great food (as all Italian food is)....place is gold. Only downside was I was here when the poms beat Australia in the rugby world cup. Unfortunately the only photos I have are from underwater....not sure what happened to the others.... read more

Approaching Genoa on the coast, I find myself tiring of the autostrada and beat a quick exit for a road following the coastline in the hills above Genoa. It turns out to be a fortuitous decision as the road turns out to be a freshly paved supermotard track. Unfortunately it’s a track that contains four-wheeled competitors so care must be taken on blind curves. I have to say…Gawd, I love Italian riding. Motorcycles can get away with anything short of murder and cops just look the other way. You pass where you want, when you want and nobody honks at you. Solid white lines are meaningless. There were times when I would fall back into American riding, trundling along behind slower traffic, only to be buzzed by a sweet young thing on her moped. I’m old ... read more

Non so se e' mai arrivato in Italia il film si chiama 'Friday.' C'e' una scena bellisima quando l'amico del protagonista, 'Smokey' convince il suo amico di andare a bere e fumare tutto il weekend. L'ha detto, 'You ain't got no job, and you ain't got shit to do!' ... read more
