Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Renaissance Rome

 Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome
Ciao everyone. Here's a "quick" update on what I've been up to, but as you all know I like to talk, well, type, so it probably won't be quick at all. Who am I kidding? Scratch that - this is going to be a long and thorough update, so prepare yourselves! Last Saturday, I walked to St. Peter’s and went to the Vatican Museums. It was World Tourism Day and the line was long, but I’m patient and I was determined to see the Sistine Chapel that morning. No excuses! I got inside and headed straight there - and because I’m [View Full Entry]

When in Rome...

 Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome
In had been a long time coming, but Ange and I finally found time to take ourselves on a honeymoon. Our plan was to spend ten days split across Rome and Paris. And of course having only been back in London for 2 weeks after our last trip to Italy, it was time for another break. And I did feel like I needed one after all the celebrations and hangovers surrounding my 30th birthday in that period. We flew out of London on the Friday night after work and of course after some delays with flights, we arrived in Rome at [View Full Entry]

Ask quanto costa (how much) to all taxis before you get in, general rule of thumb. after nearly getting scammed by 2 people i was lucky to get offered apartment from my new manager, its very central and very cheap. My room is huge and i share the spat with 4 others, 2 italians, one lad from romanian and one from bucharest. The things that i wasnt expecting was the essential things that ye dont bring with ye. Rome

 Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome
Rome ... is the capital city of Italy and is Italy's largest and most populous city, with more than 2.7 million residents, and a metropolitan area of almost 4 million inhabitants. It is located in the central-western portion of the Italian peninsula, on the Tiber river. Rome stands on top of more than two and a half thousand years of history, was once the largest city in the world and the centre of Western civilisation. Rome is still the heart of Christianity, being seat of the Roman Catholic Church which controls the Vatican City as its sovereign territory, an enclave of [View Full Entry]

Rome, La bella citta!

 Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome
First things first, I apologize for not updating my blog in a LONG time, but I felt that I couldn’t really post more about Rome without pictures, and with my camera being broken, I waited for another one before going out and taking all the pictures over again. So, here goes… I’ll start from the beginning. We got in to Rome and I haven’t really relaxed since. This city is absolutely amazing. Greece was decent, but in comparison Rome trumps every city I have ever been to. The buildings, the people, and the culture are far beyond my wildest expectations, and [View Full Entry]

BRACCIANO 26.09.08 Autumn has come. And it feels like it should be here. Sunny and breezy. Here in the countryside around Rome everything is quite. We’re sorting out the last few things before moving again. For the rest we just relax. We’re enjoying the infinite pleasure of Italian food and I’m struggling to get a bit of tan before leaving towards the cold! The only thing we’re still missing is…a Visa to Vietnam!! I guess we got distracted and we just missed the thing. We hope we’re gonna be able to get one in Moscow or in Beijing, if anyone has [View Full Entry]

Update from Rome!

 Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome
So I was way too tired to write everything that wanted to for Wednesday's entry. So, our last day in Florence, we went through a couple museusm, including the accademia which holds Michaelangelo's "David". It was spectacular, I didn't realize before that it was so huge, like 4 times the size of a normal man. Really awesome to see and we went later in the evening, so we didn't have to deal with any lines. After that we grabbed some dinner at a really cute place and then headed over to a jazz club, where they were having a blues jam [View Full Entry]
