so i finally got all set up with this blog thing. i rarely have time to connect to the internet. the only spots where i can connect for long periods of time are at the university if i get here early enough before class. the wifi is really good here at the campus locations. the dorm wifi is really inconsistent and is super slow. but oh well. i really like it here. everything is starting to fall into place. it's really neat to see how quickly people become friends. it's also sad to realize our collective circumstance of being in a foreign country with limited and/or no language skills. i kind of had to step up to the plate and be a sort of impromptu translator during our daily excursions out to the market, the shops, ... read more

It rained all day today! It was cold, windy, and dark. I stayed in and played some board games with Genevieve and Eric. Genevieve is Julia’s daughter, from Great Britain, and Eric is half Swedish, half Mexican. I had some mozzarella and salami that I had bought a few days before so I made a few sandwiches’, which were terrific, then took a nap and then eventually woke up to go see the Good Friday celebration the locals were commemorating in the town center. They did their thing with the Jesus and the music and the KKK look-a-like clothing. It was kinda weird. Overall a pretty quiet and peaceful day. I think I took like 3 naps. The mozzarella here doesn’t make me sick like back in the states and it’s incredibly delicious! I've eaten so ... read more

Today was a pretty good day. The night before I ran into Mark and Oksana and after a few glasses of wine we decided that the three of us would go driving around to look for some historic sites. We left the resort at 9am and went to Viterbo first. Viterbo has an interesting history including a story about how the town itself took part in the selection of a Pope in the 12th or 13th century. Around that time period several years had passed and the cardinals had not voted on who was to become the next Pope. Viterbo has some thermal springs and some resorts that the cardinals liked to stay in for rest and relaxation so there they all were relaxing and having a good ol’ time when the village people decided they ... read more

Piove Oggi! Quanto triste. Thats right. It rained all day. The morning started off cloudy and cold even though the forecast printed on our daily hotel journal indicated otherwise. I guess these Italian meteorologists are worse then those in the USA. I just stayed in and relaxed. I've been having a hard time adjusting to the 5 hour difference so it felt nice to be able to sleep in and recoup a little. The great thing about being on the lower level is that the restaurant is only about 40 feet away. I had a hearty breakfast and studied some Italian. Then I just chilled out, took a nap, and eventually watched the Dollar depreciate in value against the Euro before my very eyes on BBC news. Later in the day, I got asked out to ... read more

What started as a cloudy, melancholy day turned out to be incredibly relaxing and beneficial. The jet lag hit me like a bag of bricks and I quickly realized that I wouldn't be able to function properly without a good nights rest. I've felt so anxious and nervous since I booked my flights that I haven't had a proper nights' sleep in 5 days or so. Well I made up for the loss last night by going to bed early (11pm) and waking up late (9am) and getting a good breakfast and walk around before getting a good 3 hour nap in the afternoon. I had my prima collezione at the hotel. A breakfast sandwich with coffee set me back 6 Euros and I was off exploring the town by 10am. It was quite and very ... read more

First day went sorta like this: I arrived at Fulmicino Airport at aprox 11am (local time) having departed from Logan Airport in Boston and taking a 1.5hr lay-over in Dublin. There's a 5 hour difference from home and it didn't seem like it would be a big deal when I left but I'm slowly realizing how wrong I was. The flights were good. I ate a chicken-ish meal on the 1st connection and nothing at all on the second. The plane from Dublin to Rome was really small and everyone walked out on the tarmac to enter from the front and rear openings. I didn't get much sleep on either flight because I ended up chit-chatting with the other passengers. It was fun talking to these people from Ireland because of their accents and I got ... read more
