Be prepared. Be very prepared. Be prepared to be shocked and frightened. Be very scared I am going to take you on a journey. What we have here is a magical Mystery Tour. Some years ago we visited Hawkstone follies near to Shrewsbury the fantasy playground of the local family who built it to shock and surprise dour Victorian ladies . The Alton Towers of its day. Well this garden will shock and makes Hawkstone feel tame in comparison. We had seen our gardening guru Monty Don visit this garden and it was on our list of must sees this time round. Bear with me . Let me set the scene. You have to imagine a theme park of sorts but a bit more restrained. No rides, no noise, nothing jarring. You have to imagine a ... read more

I called this a “Monster Day” for two reasons. First, we saw monster sculptures in a park in Bomarzo, near Viterbo, a town about 60 miles outside of Rome. Check out the website below for more info and good photos at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomarzo#Park_of_the_Monsters. It is like going through a fun house at an amusement park, except the horrors are made of tufo, a kind of volcanic rock, and were carved in the time of Michelangelo, perhaps even done by Michelangelo. You’ll see a photo of Sally trying to stand up in the crooked house. The photo is not tilted; the house is. It was amazing how disoriented we both got. I almost fell over. Some woman beside me caught me. The second reason it was a monster day is the amount of territory we covered in one ... read more

It's December in La Rocchetta, and with the olives long gone, we have been focused on a bunch of different jobs to keep busy in between vacations. We spent the first week back from Firenze preparing the winter garden, which took some work as you can see from the before and after photos. Most of the beds were choked with the weeds and old plant debris, as well as the soaker hoses that kept it fed during the summer. We pulled out and repaired the hoses (with duct tape!), which took some doing with only two of us handling the four pronged 60ft. hoses. After that we spent some time going over the beds with spade, hoe, rake and by hand to pull out all the roots, weeds, dead tomatoes, rocks, and green matter we could ... read more

Hey Y'all, We arrived in La Rocchetta about a week ago and what an amazing week its been! When we first arrived we were dazzled by the beautiful country side. My Italian is coming back slowly and I was able to order a coffee while waiting for Michelle to pick us up at the train station in Orte. She drove us to her beautiful home in Lazzio near Bomarzo. We met her and Claudio's amazing family and with their help have picked SO MANY olives! :) First we cleared the space around the trees of weeds; Dom weedwacked and I battled with many a thorn bush til it was clear enough for us to put nets down to catch the olives. Once the ground around the trees was clear, we netted it and started picking. You ... read more

The boat to Napoli was big and fancy I was not quit sure what to do with myself so I went on deck in the fresh air, where I always feel more comfortable. I started eating my panino and not long after was invited to drink wine with a group of people from Palermo. They all work together in the fashion business but where not snoody as I would have guessed, they were down to earth and having a blast. Then they invited me along to eat dinner with them, I said yes because they were cool and I had no other big plans. We went down to this fancy restaurant on the boat, me with my hippie clothes and my huge backpack. There were only a few people quietly eating in the restaurant but ... read more

Ciao I just got back from about 10 days of traveling. First to Sicilia alone, then to Napoli where I met some friends and Katie, then we went together to Pescara to visit my family for Easter. I will start with a revised excerpt from my journal on the fifth day of my journey. 19/04/11 This is my fifth day in Sicilia. I got here last Friday after waking up at the butt crack of dawn, taking the train to Roma, then another to the airport where I was nervous about them seeing my passport and kicking me out of the country. All was fine and I didn’t get deported. After the plane to Palermo I took another two trains and finally arrived in Castellammare Del Golfo, the town I was couch surfing in. The station ... read more

Buon Giorno, Today is a beautiful day in Italia. I am lying in the grass covered with daisies. Next to me one of our cats is lounging and purring, her pregnant tummy soaking up the sun. The birds are chirping all around me. Life is sweet. I just returned from my long weekend in the mountains. My experience was full of beauty and adventure but also with a bit of internal conflict. For this reason, this blog entry may sounds a bit more pensive and a bit less comical. I headed out Thursday morning. My bag was brimming with all of the warm clothes I have, a sheet, a towel and a borrowed sleeping bag. I was wearing a rain jacket and rain boots. I was ready for the mountains. I caught the 7am train and ... read more

This is an excerpt from my journal that I took with me on my trip, with a bit of embellishment. 02/26/11, 6:22am “At the airport way early, still dark out, want to be in bed. We took three trains yesterday to get to Bologna. For the most part it went smooth. It was too and a half years ago when I first came to Bologna. It was Naomi and I and the extent of our visit was walking approximately two steps out of the train station, eating pizza and making up stories about the Italian man we were stalking who we named Antonio and decided was a model. Oh and I can’t forget that we also used the McDonald’s bathroom. The view of the city from the train station is quit misleading. If I would ... read more

La neve and other exciting things. Last night, while Katie and I were getting dressed to be fashionably late to this strange music film show we were invited to, it started to snow. I first realized this when a man, a friend of Katie’s new roommates, walked into katie’s apartment covered with snow. I said “Piacere” (nice to meet you) then ran to the window. The view of Viterbo covered in snow from Katie’s room at the fifth floor of the apartment building was spectacular. I reached my hands out in an attempt to catch the large fluffy white snowflakes. After my hands started turning red, I retrieved them from outside, closed the window, did a snow dance then finished getting ready so I could go out to play. Katie and I were almost the only ... read more

Wow a New year already. A new year to celebrate, a new year for adventure, a new year for love, nature, peace and friends. My mom and my wishes of being in Italia together finally came true. First we said we would make the trip when I turned 16, that never happened so then we said when I turned the big 18, it never happened then either so we got tattoos instead. Then I was 20 and living in Italia and she decided she had to make it happen, what better time to celebrate in Italia than for my 21st and her 50th birthday. She was on standby so she was supposed to get in on the 21st but it didn't work out that way. She went to the airport about 4 times trying to get ... read more
