Florence
Palazzo Pitti Tuesday, 4th November, 2008.
We both went down for breakfast, as it was included in our room cost, and a full English style breakfast was available.
We had a quick look at the internet before we left.
It was raining quite heavily, and we tried to get some cash out of the local machines, but to no avail. We left Pisa about ten o'clock.
We found our way around to the Autostrada easily enough and set off for Ladispoli. The journey is approximately 300 kilometers and went without much drama. We stopped a couple of times and took breaks.
At the first stop we got petrol and managed to pay cash in the office. Another , stop was at a Town called Piombino, which was a Ferry Port, to Sardinia and the Island of Elba. The banks here wouldn't allow us any money either, we tried four different cards and a couple of banks. The Italians certainly don't seem to have these systems working as well as the French.
We passed by Civitavecchia, the Port of Rome as we drove along, I was here last year, having flown, to join up with one of Fred.

Palazzo Pitti Olsen's vessel's.
On the journey today we passed the three thousand mile mark on the car, from home to here.
The strangest thing about the weather is the temperature. It is dark and gloomy, with rain and at home it would be cold, here it is 23°C, it is lovely, but is not what we are used to.
As we came into Ladispoli, we stopped the car and set up the Satnav, to bring us to the Hotel. I had stopped raining for a while but was now doing so again.
Driving through the Town a young lad went onto a crossing and I had to break suddenly, in the pouring rain, I stopped no problem, but the two lads on the moped behind me, about one foot away, didn't, so they bumped into us. Nobody seemed hurt and they didn't stop. So we all drove on. Later, when I checked the car it all seemed intact. When the rain stops we can check better, maybe some scratches.
We arrived at the Hotel and it is a Holiday complex, right next to the seafront. There are lots of crosses and things around, so I have
Florence
Palazzo Pitti called the place the Nunnery. Pat says they don't exist as the word is a convent, what do I know?
We had room 17, which is right next to the pool and under other circumstances would have been a highly sought after location. In the thunderstorm that started just before we arrived, it was just amusing. Lightning struck fairly near and the power went for about fifteen or twenty minutes. We got a phone call from reception to say they were looking into it. As we are I think the only guests, it wouldn't have taken him long to ring us all!
The Hotel has free internet access, and we were able to find out something about the place and it was set up originally to house clergy on holiday, then used as a children's home. Now the money made is used to help children around the world. The website is www.alletamerci.it and if you are passing, I would recommend.
