Quick entry, will write more later.
Climbed to the top of Vesuvio... it's truly incredible. We had this beautiful picnic lunch up there of marinated mushrooms, fresh bread, four different types of cheese, olives, wine etc. It's amazing that something that is really just like a big pimple caused so much damage and instills so much fear. The government of Naples is trying to give people incentives to move away because they're afraid it will erupt again and this time even worse - kind of like the fear of Mt St Helens.
I'm still trying to get my thoughts in order... will definitely update more once I've figured it all out.
Afternoon was spent in Napoli.. we went walking through the streets after the Archaeological Museum which was pretty cool. They have the mosaics and recreated rooms and everything from the ruins of Pompei and Ercolano.. They also have all of the 'secret stuff' that the Vatican, until recently, felt was too risky to show to people.
Had this gorgeous gelati at Gay Odin... it was stracciatella and fragola. Then we went looking for fried zucchini flowers which are just 'divine' as our leader Mel says... finally the night was finished with the annual Pizza Fest of Naples. According to the Neapolitans, there are only three types of pizza...
- marinara: tomato sauce, basil, garlic
- margarita: tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese
- double margarita: tomato sauce, and lots of mozzarella cheese.
it was beautiful. absolutely stunning.

Shar!! I see Italy is going well. Whatever "stracciatella and fragola" is it sounds delicious. Even better than the green tea frappaccinos i've been having. Anyway, remember to take lots of pics and make detailed descriptions of the food. That way when you come back, we can go to Terroni's and you can tell me how authentic their fare is. Ciao bella!
Shar, you are soooo lucky... I just got to reading your blogs now, and I MISS NAPLES AND SORRENTO SO MUCH. I went there on a day trip this summer from Rome, as I told you. But what I wanted to tell you is that the best gelati I had in Italy (I tried out Milano, Florence, Rome AND Naples) was in Rome, AND IT WAS EXACTLY STRACCIATELLA AND FRAGOLA!! How crazy... I am returning to Italy as soon as I can... xoxo Oana
