Od dwóch tygodni regularnie i całkiem bez sensu sprawdzałam prognozę pogody. Słonce, słońce za chmurami, burze, deszcz. Deszcz.

Sunday, 21 September – Galatina - Otranto Southern Puglia is quite narrow; its width between Taranto on the Ionian Sea and Brindisi on the Adriatic Sea is less than 75 km (about 45 miles). The peninsular narrows to a point at the sanctuary at Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost point on the Italian heel. Distances between towns are short and we drive slow or stop at many of the small towns on the way. We put the new compilation cd of the local Taranta folk music on the cd player, retracted the roof, and headed south to Galatina. Galatina, only 18km south of Lecce, is at the core of the Salentine Peninsula's Greek past. It is almost the only place where the pagan ritual tarantismi (Spider Music) is still practised. The tarantella folk dance evolved ... read more

Leisure Biking in Puglia and Calabria This blog does not have the details of my other biking blogs. We have been vacationing in the southern Italian regions of Puglia, Abruzzo, Basilicata and Calabria for many years. We have always wanted to try biking, but just never seemed to have the time. This year we made time and stayed at a few places that had bicycles available. There were no long distance rides, just a few leisurely rides on back roads filled with olive groves, almond, pommogranate, lemon, fig trees and many others. We had a chance to ride in the regions of Puglia and Calabria (the heel and the foot) These two regions of Italy have sprouted hundreds of Agriturismos and Masserias. These are both higher end Bed and Breakfast. They have a rural location, often ... read more

Today was our day off from cooking (and Silvestro's day off from us!) and field trip to the town of Otranto on the Adriatic coast. We had time to do a little shopping before meeting Giorgio (in charge of administration and hospitality at the school) at the cafe. Then we headed the market for a few supplies before heading over to the school to prepare our picnic from our favorite leftovers of the last few days (think meatloaf and sausages). With the arrival of our van and driver, we were off. About 40 minutes later we were on the eastern most point of Italy, the harbor of Otranto on the Adriatic Sea. New Otranto is a modern, otherwise nondescript European beach town, but it's blessed with 2 long crescents of sandy beach. Since it is currently ... read more

Today is our last day in Otranto :( I did some laundry, blogged and wrote postcards this morning. It was warm and beautiful, with a breeze starting to blow. By afternoon there were whitecaps and very rough water in the bay. This was our first mild taste of how rough a storm could be. Today was my visit with the art critic, Lucio Pozzi, at 10:30 am. He is an excellent critic and artist, and found relevant issues to discuss with each person. I found the 30 minutes very worthwhile and gained some new perspectives on my theme of aging. He thought my work was really about “visuality” and not aging… something to think about! I cleaned up my studio space and left it for the next person. I waited for Federico to pick up the ... read more

All of the BAU Fellows are making art in Otranto. Roberta Lozzi and Iona Kleinhaut are working in their apartments, but the rest have studios in the castle. Here are images of the artists in their studios. I awoke early as usual, to the beautiful morning light and the sound of the birds. The day started off very warm. Wednesday is market day. Martha and I were looking for white dresses. Everyone in this area of Italy wears white, and it looks so beautiful with the blue ocean and the warm light of the day. Paola has several gorgeous dresses, so most of the women here wanted a white dress. I was lucky and found a white linen dress for $20, probably a size to large, but it will be great over a swim suit or for local café dinner out in Croatia! I am almost positive it won’t look as gorgeous in Kansas. Martha did not find one but the hunt was not over. I spent the rest of the morning finishing ... read more

We got up at the normal hour, breakfast on the balcony, and tried to find the travel agent. One agency was supposed to open at 9:00 and the other at 9:30…. At 9:45, neither had opened. In the meantime, I walked around and shopped at all my favorite food places. I need to get train tickets to Bari for our trip on Friday. Martha and I hung out at the cathedral for 30 minutes before the castle opened at 10:00. It is interesting to begin to have a relationship with the church with so many visits to it. We try to go every day. We spent the most time today in the crypt looking for Maltese crosses of the crusaders and knights. I worked in the studio in the morning and got several layers of gum ... read more

Although there was nothing on the schedule today, it ended up being a very full and exciting day! Paola has a friend with a store here in Otranto. She sells beautiful fabrics and linens and clothing. We all want to look Italian and have white linen dresses! (Will we ever wear them in the US?) We met Paula at 12:00 to go to the store. Such beautiful cottons dresses!!! Several of them went out the door with our group! Martha and I did not find our white dresses… but the hunt was on! Paola and Dagmar and I went to the beach, the "Bahia di Turkis". This beach was the landing site of the Turks in 1480 when they captured Otranto. It is a 20 minute ride in the motorized cart (they probably go 40-50 mph), ... read more

I woke up around 7 this Saturday morning and grabbed photo equipment to take some pictures. I saw 5 cats, the first I’ve seen. I saw the street sweeper, the trash man… it wasn’t really a good time, lots of parked cars around, very contrasty light. Guess I have to get up earlier on a week day. I decided this was a stay at home day, no studio time. I shrank and sized paper and worked on the blog. I picked up sandwiches for our walk/swim/picnic this afternoon. Paola declared that it was too hot for the walk/swim, so we will try it Sunday at 8:00 am. We ate our picnic lunch at the house and had ice in our beer, Costa Rican beach style. Then we went to the beach for a little swim. My ... read more
