Three months in Italy, sedentary but restless, and I’m ready for a new adventure. This time I won’t be alone, the faithful Rocinante will accompany me on the roads of Europe and maybe further beyond. It’s not a horse as the name might suggest, it's my beautiful mountain bike. I’ve bought it two years ago, brand new. It only cost 214 € and is by far the cheapest among all those that I see around when I go out training. Nevertheless, it has already accompanied me through the whole Scandinavian peninsula without even the slightest protest. The proof that we live in a society where appearance counts more than substance, where the important thing is to buy, not to make good use of what we have. Life at thirty can look just so excepcionally intense or equally depressingly empty; all depends from the perspective one assumes to observe it. At the moment I see mine a bit groovy, full of X’s and hence -in a way- fascinating. Others, in these past months dedicated to prepare the upcoming, long, solo journey around the world, have assumed a totally different point of view, the If I were you one. Quoting Fabrizio De Andrè, a famous italian songwriter passed away a few years ago, “Si sa che la gente da buoni consigli se non puo’ dare il cattivo esempio” (“It’s well known that people gives good advices when unable to set the bad exemple”). A trent’anni la vita può apparire tanto eccezionalmente intensa quanto deprimentemente vuota; tutto dipende dalla prospettiva che uno assume nell’osservarla. Io la mia la vedo al momento un tanto intrecciata, piena di X e quindi -in un certo senso- affascinante. Altri, in questi ultimi mesi dedicati alla preparazione dell’imminente, lungo e solitario viaggio intorno al mondo, hanno assunto un punto di vista totalmente distinto, quello del Se io fossi te . Tale visione del mondo si riassume con una frase di De André: “Si sa che la gente da buoni consigli se non può dare il cattivo esempio”.
