''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

Studly Horses 2/09/09 Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Killarney
Wednesday 2 september Bags and breaky 7am Leave 8am The pastries at breakfast were delicious. We headed off in fairly nice but drizzly conditions to the National Irish Horse Stud. I thought it was going to be a boring stop, but it was a lovely, peaceful morning. The highlight was seeing Vintage Crop, who’s in retirement there. We saw the stallions, especially Invisible Spirit, who had covered 110 mares that season and is worth over $US 60 million. They know when the mares are in season by using a teaser horse. The guide, David, was informative and interesting. I had a [View Full Entry]

Irish Fun 3/09/09 Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Killarney
Thursday 3 September This morning we were excited to go on the Ring Of Kerry excursion. We were lucky that the rain looked like it was stopping! Perfect timing. We drove off on some very narrow and dangerous roads. At one time, there was a near accident, when some idiot overtook us, nearly hitting oncoming traffic. The coach driver rang his licence plate into the police. The views were finally what I expected of Ireland. Beautiful coastlines and inlets. Many green mountains… although they did not compare to those in Scotland. Not even close. It was a lovely day though and [View Full Entry]

By morning the rain had gone, which gave us a great opportunity to explore Dublin on our last day before flying back home. We found the obligatory Hop On/Hop Off Tourist Bus service (of which as usual there were many) and began exploring Dublin. We stopped at the famous status of Molly Malone for some photos, and then hopped back on the bus headed for the Guinness Store House. I can honestly say this was one place I have been looking forward to visiting. The place where they make the blessed nectar, to hear how Arthur Guinness started selling Ales and [View Full Entry]

Here I am in Vienna! Can't wait to get some photos in Ireland.
I have been a traveler all my life (airforce brat) but I still get the giddy feeling in my stomach as the departure for a trip grows near. My husband Jim and I are heading for Ireland. While I have my typical ritual for getting ready which requires buying and reading way too many travel guides, underlining everything that sounds interesting to me and marking them on a map (I know way too obsessive). My husband is cruising the internet shopping networks buying sweaters and jackets for the trip. His plan is to wing it, meet people and drink lots of [View Full Entry]

A wet start to today didn’t stop us enjoying the gallery and showroom of Waterford Crystal. We found a nice memento within our budget and headed towards Kilkenny for Lunch. A drive though what I am sure was nice countryside to look at but could not be seen through the rain and mist brought us to the medieval town of Kilkenny. We visited the local Castle and enjoyed a walk through the staterooms on show. The gardens although inviting were inaccessible through the rain unless we wanted to get wet through, so we walked into town and found a pub for [View Full Entry]

Blarney! 4/09/09 Europe » Ireland » County Waterford » Waterford
Friday 4 September We headed off this morning towards Blarney, gearing up to kiss the stone. The castle is really lovely and relaxing. A peaceful stop, but then again, we had just beaten bus loads of tourists. The climb up the tower is through a quite narrow spiral staircase. There were tiney rooms coming off the staircase. Certainly a modest castle! When we reached the top, there was only a very small line up. The story is that a prince saved a drowning witch from a river and she returned the favour by telling him there was a magic rock at [View Full Entry]

We awoke to another grey and wet day. Our first stop was King John’s Castle built in the 13th Century on the orders of King John, a much despised English monarch, so much so that only one likeness of him (a statue) still remains in a church somewhere in England. We had the Castle to ourselves due as much to the weather as to our arriving at opening time. We then walked over to the historic St Mary’s Cathederal, but were unable to see inside due to services underway, so decided to head south to County Cork and Blarney Castle. Blarney [View Full Entry]

Blarney Castle

We awoke to a wet and dreary Dublin, but undeterred we headed into the City to meet one of Lynn’s oldest friends. We found her with her 2 lovely girls under an arch overlooking the Ha’penny Bridge. We spent the morning enjoying a coffee, catching up on old times, and watching the girls run riot (as a 2 and 3 year old do). :-) We enjoyed lunch with them and then headed to Limerick, our overnight stop. Once we had left Dublin we drove out from under the gloomy weather and enjoyed the Irish country side as we drive across the [View Full Entry]

Much as I would have liked to travel further afield this summer (having recently completed a teaching qualification I've had over 2 months off) but my meagre funds have not allowed this (too many shoes perhaps?!), so I decided to go to Ireland for a week, staying at my family's cottage in Ardmore, in the south of Ireland. My paternal grandmother who was born not too far from Ardmore bought the cottage around 25 years ago so my family - and friends of the family - have been using it ever since. Ardmore (in Gaelic, 'Aird Mhor', frequently seen on signs [View Full Entry]
