''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

Planning our route! Lots of changes as we negotiate!
Hi all, Just thought I would update you on my preparations for Ireland. Maybe it will be helpfull for anyone else preparing to travel. I have bought my new tiny netbook so I'm checking all my hotels to see if they have wireless service so I can blog along the way. This thing is so small and light it won 't take up much space in my carry on at all. I'm also planning to get online to order a backup battery and power converter for laptops since the one in my netbook has only 3 hours of battery time. Any [View Full Entry]

Well, I've been in Dublin now for almost two weeks now and have made it feel like a homeawayfromhome for sure. I decided to sublet a place here for the month of September to get a feel for what it would be like to actually live here, a feeling that has now definitely settled in. What I like most about the city is the pub scene, which is lucky since it isn't the kind of place that fires on all cylinders. With the rain falling mostly every day it becomes easy to become a bar fly. My normal routine is to [View Full Entry]

September 1 We had a slow start today and at 9am went on our Dublin tour with Kate. She cracked us up by laughing huskily at all her own jokes. We visited Dublin castle and then were free. We headed straight for the Temple Bar, passing Molly Malone on the way. The Temple bar was fantastic. Great atmosphere. Would have loved to have heard the music. The bartender was lots of fun, poking fun at us. We shared a great BLT for lunch. I bought a fantastic tshirt there. We headed off in different directions then. I started on the ‘local’ [View Full Entry]

Allo readers. What's the craic? It's me again, and this time I'm on time! I would like to make a point. After spending a week driving along the south coast of the beautiful country of Ireland, I am quite convinced that I have discovered a conspiracy behind the “droughts” we were forced to endure when growing up in Gunnedah…. Ireland has been secretly stealing all the rain from the rest of the planet. Thieving bastards! It has done nothing but lash down for a whole week, with nary a crack o’ te sun in the days. But, avid readers, that didn’t [View Full Entry]

Birr, Ireland I’m typing this in our cottage in Birr, Ireland. We have no internet access here but I’m hoping to get wi-fi access from a hotel in town to send this. Ken and the girls are playing cards in the next room. We’re in a lovely little, old cottage in the grounds of a castle which is still lived in by the same family who have had it for 14 generations. The grounds are extensive and open to the public. Ken has been for a long walk both mornings and Lucy and I went for a walk this morning (and [View Full Entry]

On our last day on Manchester we decided to tackle the rail system and go into the city - a far better option than driving in! It is safe to say that Hong Kong really did spoil us for any future public transport, and the rail system in Manchester was neither speedy, nor clean! We did make it in to the city and back however, and had a great time exploring, including going on the Manchester Wheel to get a good view of the city. Jen and I were terrified and held hands - well more like clutched hands - for [View Full Entry]

Since I don't have internet where I'm staying, I can't do a prpper blog with pictures and the like, but what I can do from this internet cafe in Galway, is post a copy of the email I sent to my family describing what I'm doing so far, so everyone can be informed if they'd like to be. Read on... _______ Hi Everyone, It turns out I don't really have internet access at the place where I'm living, so updates will end up being rather infrequent, I think. But things are going well! It hasn't even been a week since I [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Dublin late it was straight to Days Hotel, which was in the middle of nowhere and close to nothing. We had a Crazy drunk taxi man drive us from the airport to the hotel doing 120 in a 60 zone.....but he did advise us that he has only lost his licence 6 times which was reassuring. We were charged twice for the hotel and when we got there they told us that they had given our room away.......Free Upgrade though......It was up early and into town for us the next day.....Di-sy had a miagrane so we had to leave [View Full Entry]
