''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

Birr, Ireland I’m typing this in our cottage in Birr, Ireland. We have no internet access here but I’m hoping to get wi-fi access from a hotel in town to send this. Ken and the girls are playing cards in the next room. We’re in a lovely little, old cottage in the grounds of a castle which is still lived in by the same family who have had it for 14 generations. The grounds are extensive and open to the public. Ken has been for a long walk both mornings and Lucy and I went for a walk this morning (and [View Full Entry]

September 1 We had a slow start today and at 9am went on our Dublin tour with Kate. She cracked us up by laughing huskily at all her own jokes. We visited Dublin castle and then were free. We headed straight for the Temple Bar, passing Molly Malone on the way. The Temple bar was fantastic. Great atmosphere. Would have loved to have heard the music. The bartender was lots of fun, poking fun at us. We shared a great BLT for lunch. I bought a fantastic tshirt there. We headed off in different directions then. I started on the ‘local’ [View Full Entry]

Allo readers. What's the craic? It's me again, and this time I'm on time! I would like to make a point. After spending a week driving along the south coast of the beautiful country of Ireland, I am quite convinced that I have discovered a conspiracy behind the “droughts” we were forced to endure when growing up in Gunnedah…. Ireland has been secretly stealing all the rain from the rest of the planet. Thieving bastards! It has done nothing but lash down for a whole week, with nary a crack o’ te sun in the days. But, avid readers, that didn’t [View Full Entry]

On our last day on Manchester we decided to tackle the rail system and go into the city - a far better option than driving in! It is safe to say that Hong Kong really did spoil us for any future public transport, and the rail system in Manchester was neither speedy, nor clean! We did make it in to the city and back however, and had a great time exploring, including going on the Manchester Wheel to get a good view of the city. Jen and I were terrified and held hands - well more like clutched hands - for [View Full Entry]

Since I don't have internet where I'm staying, I can't do a prpper blog with pictures and the like, but what I can do from this internet cafe in Galway, is post a copy of the email I sent to my family describing what I'm doing so far, so everyone can be informed if they'd like to be. Read on... _______ Hi Everyone, It turns out I don't really have internet access at the place where I'm living, so updates will end up being rather infrequent, I think. But things are going well! It hasn't even been a week since I [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Dublin late it was straight to Days Hotel, which was in the middle of nowhere and close to nothing. We had a Crazy drunk taxi man drive us from the airport to the hotel doing 120 in a 60 zone.....but he did advise us that he has only lost his licence 6 times which was reassuring. We were charged twice for the hotel and when we got there they told us that they had given our room away.......Free Upgrade though......It was up early and into town for us the next day.....Di-sy had a miagrane so we had to leave [View Full Entry]

Studly Horses 2/09/09 Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Killarney
Wednesday 2 september Bags and breaky 7am Leave 8am The pastries at breakfast were delicious. We headed off in fairly nice but drizzly conditions to the National Irish Horse Stud. I thought it was going to be a boring stop, but it was a lovely, peaceful morning. The highlight was seeing Vintage Crop, who’s in retirement there. We saw the stallions, especially Invisible Spirit, who had covered 110 mares that season and is worth over $US 60 million. They know when the mares are in season by using a teaser horse. The guide, David, was informative and interesting. I had a [View Full Entry]

Thursday 3 September This morning we were excited to go on the Ring Of Kerry excursion. We were lucky that the rain looked like it was stopping! Perfect timing. We drove off on some very narrow and dangerous roads. At one time, there was a near accident, when some idiot overtook us, nearly hitting oncoming traffic. The coach driver rang his licence plate into the police. The views were finally what I expected of Ireland. Beautiful coastlines and inlets. Many green mountains… although they did not compare to those in Scotland. Not even close. It was a lovely day though and [View Full Entry]

By morning the rain had gone, which gave us a great opportunity to explore Dublin on our last day before flying back home. We found the obligatory Hop On/Hop Off Tourist Bus service (of which as usual there were many) and began exploring Dublin. We stopped at the famous status of Molly Malone for some photos, and then hopped back on the bus headed for the Guinness Store House. I can honestly say this was one place I have been looking forward to visiting. The place where they make the blessed nectar, to hear how Arthur Guinness started selling Ales and [View Full Entry]
