''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

Northern Ireland Europe » Ireland
Northern Ireland Northern Ireland was a bit different. No more dolls houses (odd, large rectangular houses, very symmetrical that look exactly like a dolls house on a piece of flat land - everywhere in the area of Ireland we drove in). Stopped by armed Police at the entry (via a back route) to Omagh and had to show Ken’s passport. The Police stations in all the towns we saw were large and well protected (fences, barbed wire etc). Great little B&B. Visited the Ulster Folk Park (really good with people in each little house telling about life “in the olden days”. [View Full Entry]

I can't wait to hear about his trip and see all the pics! Andrew was right...Mom's making sure he takes lots of pictures for meh. Gnarly. Can you tell that Galway's been on the brain? Rock Of Dunamaise, Co. Laoise, Ireland
So, apparently every time we leave Wicklow without an escort, the weather turns to pot. We did a trip to the west by car, going through stab city (aka Limerick) and stopping at Ennis. Great town and an even greater hostel: the Rowan Tree. Totally recommend it. Next day we headed off to see Bunratty Castle and its medieval village (great castle, village was a little crap), a bunch of abbeys as usual, and the Cliffs of Moher. These were truly spectacular, and there is a walk you can do to get to a few awesome vantage points. These points were [View Full Entry]

Howdy folks! Well here I am 3 weeks before my travels and still no Visa, even though I have booked my return flights (tut tut!), getting used to using this blog craic. And it doesn't seem too bad - yet. Basically the plan is to fly to New Delhi and make my way to Kathmandu in Nepal by train and bus. From there fly to Lukla, which is where most people start their ascent to Everest Base Camp. Climb to EBC and down again, hopefully still intact. Then make my way back into India and make my from the North to [View Full Entry]

Today we drove into the town of Killarney. Yesterday we drove the Ring of Kerry. We ventured off the main path and found some old castles and stone forts that had ben mentioned in a book we had. It was well worth it. We had each place to ourselves and didn't have to deal with any tour buses. We found a pull out spot along the road with an overlook of some cliffs and the beach to set up camp for the night. While there Scott got to play "medic morri" There were some people jumping of the clifs into the [View Full Entry]

I dropped off my last form to be filled out that I need to make my application to NUI Galway complete. It was almost hard letting it go. I passed the point of no return long ago, but this just makes it official. All I have to do is wait for my letters of recommendation to arrive. This is going to be the most amazing journey of my life...yet I can't always seem to get past the negative. Missing family, missing friends, missing student life at Texas A&M. But how much of that will I really be missing out on? I [View Full Entry]

My Encouragement: Email from daddy The woman who really wants to do something finds a way, the woman who doesn't, finds an excuse. You found a way which shows desire, determination, character, and tenacity. Let me tell you another secret in life - a busy man is recruited for high positions and seldom a man with time on his hands. Why you ask? Because the busy man has proven he can multi-task and is effective at getting stuff done. One more lesson then I will shut up. Knowing all of this, it is still important to know your limitations and not [View Full Entry]

Our Dublin synagogue is sparsely furnished but has all the requisite parts. The wooden floor is worn, the pews creak, the prayer book has its usual heft. Most comforting are the faces: I am introduced to Max, wearing the face of my Uncle Buddy. Hillary is my Mom’s friend Ethel. Together, we flap the pages of our prayer books, weave back and forth in prayer and song, pretend that we are tuneful when we’re not. We fast. So here’s what’s different: The synagogue is at an undisclosed location, so we tell the taxi driver we’re going to a community hall. There [View Full Entry]

Roxie and I toured the Irish countryside by traveling to the Wicklow Hills and visiting Glendalough (the valley of two lakes), which is renowned for its early medieval monastic settlement founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. The relics which remain are the gateway to the monastery, a very small church, the remains of a larger church (floors & walls), a 98 foot high round tower that was probably used for storage and a place of refuge in times of attack, and a graveyard with tombstones dating back to the 6th century. This is one of the outer towers of this 15th century castle. It is located on the River Suir.
On our way to Dublin we visited Cahir Castle, Swiss Cottage, Rock of Cashel, and Cashel Cathedral. We stayed one night at a B&B, The Rockville House, in Cashel. [View Full Entry]
