Wow!!! Only 3 days until we leave on our trip of a lifetime!! The backpacks are full, hostels booked, and we kinda know what we want to see. We are sure of one thing.....go where the locals go! Lisa and I have been planning this trip for a couple of years. I have been very fortunate to have done lots of travelling but this is Lisa's first trip out of North America!! She has dreamed of seeing Ireland since she was a little girl. We will be arriving in Shannon then taking the bus to Galway with plans to spend the weekend on the Arran Islands. I travelled to Ireland in 1991 with a group of Girl Guides and look forward to returning to show it off to Lisa. Look out cause here we come!!!... read more

Day 5 Today we went to Kilkenny to see the Kilkenny Castle and we took the right road this time which lead us there with no problems. It’s not too far from Inistioge so that was pretty good. The castle tour was very interesting. We saw several rooms which were decorated mostly Victorian. Not many of the original pieces of furniture are there but they did a good job in finding suitable replacements. They are still refurbishing parts of the castle. The price wasn’t bad to get in (11.50eu) for the three of us. There wasn’t even a gift-shop at the end of the tour which really amazed us. Kilkenny is a very busy little town with narrow streets. We walked around a bit and visited some shops. We posed for a picture outside of Smithwicks ... read more

Hey guys, so got in around 9:15 and was so happy to see many lovely boys with Irish accents.. of course! I was also entertained by the fact that the bathrooms are labeled 'ladies' and 'gents', kind of a better twist on it! I quickly figured out how to get to City Centre via the Dublin City bus, and hopped right on, it was cool because it was a public city bus, but a double decker with an electronic alert system. I guess we are behind on all of this stuff! However, I got the name... and street of my hostel completely mixed up, so I had to go to three different hostels before finally stumbling upon the right one. But I was really happy to find that the staff there, and some of the people ... read more

Yes please! Ok, so we headed over to Kilkenny after Dublin and rode on our first train, which was amazing. I am now in love with train rides; they are comfy and you have a table to play cards on! So Kilkenny is a really Irish town that it is very small with a bad ass castle. We did a tour of this castle (after taking a tour of the castle grounds, which we both took the opportunity to pee on our first castle!) and during this tour we came upon a huge marble table. Whilst Dillon was sitting upon this table the guide goes on to tell the group that it was used to lay the dead bodies on during the wake. So he was embarassed and stood up quickly, then proceeded to exclaim, ''Shit!'', ... read more

Day 4 Our B&B again tonight is the Woodstock Arms in Inistioge. It is really kind of charming and located right above the pub. Inistioge is such a nice little place. We had our breakfast and then headed to our relatives house again to meet up with more of the family. Dan (our newfound relative) showed us a lovely little church called Clodigh which survived Cromwell’s attacks because it was built in a little valley and surrounded by brush and trees and the English soldiers didn’t find it so it survived the raids. He also showed us a tiny little cave where the priest would hide when warned of an attack. It is a very small place right on the side of the road which hundreds of people pass everyday but not many people know about. ... read more

Hi All, At last our big adventure has gotten underway. We set off on Thursday morning (We'll skip the leaving ceremony) from Home, Navan, and the first stop on our illustriuos and exotic adventure was the local school to vote on the Lisbon Treaty - none too exotic or illustrious. The next stop was the local filling station to pump up what I considered to be a slow puncture, which soon turned out to be a very quick puncture and so the next stop on our journey was to the local tyre fixing man. Three stops in and we were still within spitting distance of Navan, oh well. The offending screw was dealt with, in no uncertain terms and now has to live out its days rusting away on the side of the a-fore mentioned tyre ... read more

When we landed in Dublin i was shocked to find that all of the signs were written in english. Conversations going on nearby were in english. my native language was so familiar but its ubiquity was out of place. we arrived after midnight and were promptly herded to the city buses. even though the hostel was right across the street from the main bus station, there were no buses going anywhere near the hostel. we walked 15-20min down dimly lit dublin streets. we slept in bunks with a family of four from utah. we stored our packs in a cage in the basement of the old hostel while we explored. as we left the hostel a taxi driver dropping off a customer, said,"...but i wouldnt walk down this street at night." We bought tickets to Ennis ... read more

We got up this morning and had another nice breakfast. I switched to pancakes though because that Irish breakfast was so big and filling, and those pancakes looked a bit lighter & so good. They were very good indeed! Today we headed to Blarney Castle (not to kiss the stone - how gross!). We toured part of the house on the property which is still occupied as a residence to the heirs of the people who purchased the castle many years ago. It is absolutely gorgeous. We were able to see the living room, dining room, and a couple of the bedrooms. It was a nice tour and didn't cost as much as the castle one. I believe it was 8eu for the three of us. The castle would be much more and I didn't think ... read more

...that I'm leaving Dublin today, which means I won't update this often. I've no idea how many Internet cafes there are on the west coast, or how much they cost. So not updating doesn't mean I'm dead, it means Internet costs 2€ for ten minutes, dig? I don't know why I keep forgetting to mention stuff. Yesterday I also went to Dublinia, a museum for medieval Ireland & Vikings. My expectations were low; my travel guide (book, that is) says it's especially good fun for kids, but most of the visitors were adults, and it actually was good fun. Most of the stuff were reproductions, so you could touch them, even try on medieval clothes. There was also a woman who played to be, well, medieval. She kinda looked like a wax figure, which was weird. ... read more

We talked, we really connected. she was in Oz about 4 years ago so we talked about places she had been and she gave me advice for my visit to Ireland. ...... So I decide to go back to John's and she decides to accompany me. the rest is great but censored! She is married-oops!
