After the horror that was the ferry ride we were delighted to finally arrive in Ireland. Our first city was Cork. Cork is the European Capital of Culture for 2005 and the city reflected it. It was a very beautiful city but it lacked the edge that the other cities in Ireland had. On our first day we went to Blarney to visit the castle. We climbed the tower to the top of the castle and prepared ourselves to dangle upside down hundreds (well it felt like hundreds) of feet above the gardens to kiss the legendary Blarney Stone. Legend has it that those who kiss the Blarney Stone are forever blessed with the gift of gab. Since Andrea didn't get a good picture the first time Liz had to kiss the stone twice so she's ... read more
Did you know that it's not the celebration of Mexican Independence (from the Spanish)....but rather the Mexican defeat of the French Army? It's true....I think most people just say Independence for the hell of it, even though they live next door to us (in the U.S.)--maybe we should know a bit more. Anyway, I just had one of the most memorable weeks of my life....My advice to the ladies out there: in your life take at least one road trip with a couple of other girls!!!! My advice to the gents: ditto---well, maybe with a couple of other guys...lol. I never laughed so much, my sides are still recovering and perhaps are rock solid muscle from the contractions caused by such laughter. I had 2 visitors in Ireland for a week....I swear we covered every philosophical ... read more
So-- I'll make every attempt to relate the smells that I am so fortunate to be exposed to (and can actually smell since I don't smoke ciggies)...I wake up on my purple sheets in my white walled bedroom...the sun pours in (on those lucky days) and the first scent of the day comes with it, i call it 'morning dew' and it fills my nose....a scent some may classify as 'moldy' but it's much lovelier than that...it's more like a wet freshness....like if you bottled up 'fresh morning' and sold it as perfume, that's what it'd be like...yea, yea, that's it. I guess with all the rain/dampness here it's a pretty standard irish smell, I'm sure anyone who has been here knows what I mean...(think!-everything is covered in moss...)... On my way to work (where ever ... read more
So I was able to hitch a ride from Doolin to Galway and I gave Armindo €10 because gas is around $4 gallon. Neither of us knew the area but it seemed to be near the city center so he pulled over and dropped me off on some corner. It was cool that he drove me because I got to see some of the Burren which I wouldnt have been able to see without doing a tour or renting a car or something. Plus it gave me someone to chill with, i'll be honest and say im just happy to be alive because the roads are extremely narrow. Theyre not even roads really, more like paved paths so everyone drives in the middle since theyre so narrow, but theyre also driving 100km/h and around blind bends. ... read more
Sad, but true...my camera officially kicked the bucket today...dead, la fin, kaput! First things first, I accept my loss. The final blow came when I took it to a camera dealer and he basically said it was a crap camera anyway....thanks photography teacher a few years back for recommending it! Anyway, I'm on the case to get a new one...what's a photographer without her camera...? Unless I get me a black box and a pin. hmmm....Oh well. I have to say the last batch of photos I posted were not my best, as has been agreed upon by a certain someone, won't mention any names...Sometimes the creative vision just isn't there and I revert back to "point and shoot" mode...so sorry if they weren't visually appealing... Anyway I just wanted to share that with you....So it ... read more
Drinking the Black Magic in Doolin...
Published: April 19th 2005Europe » Ireland » County Clare » DoolinWell its been a couple days but i've decided to go onward and forward with my flight to Dubrovnik, i found a bunch other numbers to call for lodging. Let's see whats happened since my last entry... Well I got Fish and Chips again since its cheap, fills you up and is relatively good and found Ken chilling in the common room which he usually does and asked him if he wanted to go check out the Comedy Store, which he did. We went over around 6 but doors didnt open until 630 so we went to a small pub and I tried a beer called London Pride which was pretty good and Hoegaarden or Boegaarden, something Belgian and it was a white ale. I didnt like it too much, seemed like something thats an acquired ... read more
On Monday nights theres a bar called McDermotts that ha a group of 4 young guys from Ennis that come down and play some traditional Irish music so that was a great time. The music which nauseated me during St. patricks day at outback was a lot of fun in its proper setting. I had some guiness, smithwicks and a delicious bowl of real Irish Stew. I met 2 more Americans who were real laid back and had a good time hanging out with them for the night. This morning I woke up at 7:45am and rented (or hired) a bike for the day for €10 and rode up to the Cliffs of Moher. It took about 45 minutes and it was exhausting and I realized any incline over 0.0004 degrees may as well be a ... read more
Hey all! I got a CD back with some photos from St Patrick's weekend...I'm only going to throw up a few cos the sun is shining and I have to get out and get me some of those rays! ;) It rained ALL DAY yesterday...go figure, it's Ireland. Can't believe there's only two months left for me. What's with the whale in the Delaware river? Is that true? Has anyone been anywhere? Got any travel stories to share? Post some messages! Jeanine and Gene I'd love to hear about your road trip...(part work part pleasure--the way to do it!) Anyway love you all. Roxy... read more
Hello to anyone who reads these.....hope you are doing well, and feeling fresh with the new wave of spring rolling in! I am doing wonderful...I'm locked out of my house right now so am taking up residence at the only other place I feel comfortable....the invisible arena of cyber space! ;) I thought of everyone back home (or where ever you are, if not in philly) and decided to upload a few shots i took whilst roadtrippin round ireland with my first US visitor, Brian!!! Looking forward to Aunt Aggie and Michele coming! and then Frankie! What a gorgeous country! I was completely dazed by Connemara, a true gem. However because I live under the steadfast rule of Murphy's law, all the photos I took while passing through there were damaged in the photo lab. But ... read more
Today was alright. It started off good. We got up, had breakfast, got all packed and walked to the train station in Dublin. It was a little bit far, but the packs worked well. We walked along the river, which wasn't that impressive, but I liked how each bridge was different. We got to the station at the perfect time, and got our Eurail pass verified. The train ride was nice. Read some, ate lunch and saw a lot of pretty landscape. It was much more like how I thought Ireland would look. We arrived in Galway at 2:15pm only to find out that the bus for Doolin didn't leave until 6pm!! I was definitely not happy. We sat in a cafe for most of the time, walked around the town (I was freezing and very ... read more
