''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

Arrived in Ireland Europe » Ireland
Friday 2nd September: Early start to catch the 850am flight from London Standsted to Ireland. The weather on arrival in Ireland was spectacular and I couldn't have asked for a nicer day. I'm currently staying in a town called Ballybunion in County Kerry, nestled on the Atlantic coast and probably most famous for its golf course, often rated in the top ten courses in the world. Amazingly Ballybunion golf course gets almost as many visitors per year as St Andrews in Scotland, I managed to catch a glimpse of the late afternoon sun behind what's known as the Castle Green, the [View Full Entry]

Hi Folks, Last weekend we went for a hotair balloon ride. What a magnificent experience that was ! I collected Elena my friend and her daughters Loriana and Barbara and drove to Trim, a place near Dublin. It turned out to be a perfect day with cristal clear skies and gentle breeze - ideal for a balloon flight. We all met our hotair balloon pilot, the congenial and friendly Victor from Argentina and his team in the Trim castle, near Dublin. He collected all of us in his van and took us to the launching field, a large green field with [View Full Entry]

Carl and I maxed out our three days in Dublin. We arrived at 8am and spent the first day wandering the streets. Dropped our stuff off at a dodgy hostel. We headed straight for the temple bar district and had a look around, saw the 'Book of Kells' at Trinity College, and took the Guinness Tour (while the tour was so so, the view from the 7th floor and the Guinness was worth the full price). We had lunch there too. We ended up back in the temple bar district and did a mini pub crawl to hit the most places [View Full Entry]

Bag is packed. Although packed is overstating it a bit. I'm bringing the bare minimum. If Thailand is as cheap as everyone says, then it'll be a brand new t-shirt everyday. Most of it is malaria tablets. Dozens of 'em. Nosophobic!!!! So the itinerary goes like this. Thailand - 3 weeks Hong Kong - 1 week New Zealand - 2 weeks Fiji - 1 week The Cook Islands - 1 week Los Angeles - As long as I want (or until the immigration officers find me) So I'm flying out tomorrow. Two stopovers, London and Singapore, arriving on the island of [View Full Entry]

Kinsale Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Cork
On one of my daytrips around County Cork I decided to go to a small town on the coast called Kinsale. This is a cool artsy town full of shops and well...artwork. I took the bus in the afternoon to the town center and walked around all day. It wasn't a very eventful day but it was fun. It was also a test to see what its like with a lot of solo time since I would be traveling by myself two months. I walked around town and saw Desmond Castle where they held American POWs in the Revolutionary War. The [View Full Entry]

Dad’s bday! We had a buffet breakfast this morning-mostly English breakfast stuff like eggs and bacon and sausages, there was like irish pudding which wasn’t all that nice but at least it was different. I stuffed myself! Since irish food is rather expensive we decided to have a big breakfast and manage not to have lunch! We drove to the National Botanical Gardens to have a walk around, there were lotsa species of plants there with magnificent greenhouses. We stopped by at the pub opposite a bought pint of Irish lager which was quite sweet, better tasting than yesterday’s [View Full Entry]

Dublin 2005 Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
We woke up really early today-about 3 am-nearly didn’t wake up if it weren’t for Kung and Po waking us up. We drove to Stansted airport-it was magnificent! Typical Norman Foster architecture style. It was crowded! We actually had to queue up to get into departures. The flight was a good chance to catch up on some sleep! We got to Dublin on a cool morning. We were wondering how to get around the city…as transport was really expensive (the bus cost 5 euros a day per person!) in the end we resorted to renting a car-a Volkswagen golf which was [View Full Entry]

Visited Countries Map Arrived in the land of Leprechauns on Sunday July 17th. Met up with Grandma Joan who arrived from Montreal an hour or so before, picked up the rental car and drove south down the coast to Arklow. After a few minutes of going around in circles, we found the cottage we had rented on the internet back in December. Turned out to be a fully functional three bedroom bungalow in a little subdivision just 10 minutes walk from the ocean beach. The beach was very nice but the Irish Se [View Full Entry]

Bill and the Blarney Stone

So Doolin was pretty much awesome. It's not really a town or a village - there's no convenience store or gas station or even a hotel. It's a road (just barely wide enough for two lanes) that goes from the Doolin pier and connects an Upper Village and a Lower Village. It's about a mile between the two villages, and there's nothing in that mile except for B&Bs, farmhouses, and my hostel. It's something like a national shrine to trad. Everywhere I've been, people talk about the 'legendary' McDermott's and McGann's, which are the two pubs in the Upper Village. I [View Full Entry]

The trip to Dublin -- our only organized trip as a group -- was arranged so that we could see the High Court of Ireland. Aside from those few set hours, we had the remainder of the weekend to choose our own adventure. The trip started Thursday after class. Nearly everyone (minus Joe) boarded the 2:20 train for Dublin, including professors Lenich and Stacy. We spent most of the two-hour ride playing intense games of Uno.... which I know I played as a kid… but didn’t remember being so fun. After we arrived in Dublin, Sean, Dan and I met up [View Full Entry]
