''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

On most days, there are huge swans on the river Corrib-ya know, the river that runs right next to my housing, beside which is the path that I walk every day to get to class or elsewhere. Yes, it is badass. My Corrib Village ID card is a seriously ghetto-laminated piece of paper with my Beloit application picture stuck in, and my name scrawled across in someone else's handwriting. The lamination is already coming apart. Classic. If you pet a stray dog, it WILL follow you home in the cutest way possible. Wagging and smiling and nuzzling your hand occasionally. Ireland is green with lots of sheep and potatoes. Very quiet as we went in the low season. Very pretty. Jon did a great job driving us around. Here are some photos. [View Full Entry]

Hey Guys, This is our trip to Dublin, Michael and I went for our six year anniversary. Beautiful city but very expensive. And apparently the Guiness is better there than anywhere else. Just ask Michael, he got absolutely wasted on the stuff!! Which is why I couldn't keep him off the statues. [View Full Entry]

Trip to Dublin

In the course of having to cook for myself here, I've experimented a little, and to put it modestly, had great success. Alex and I decided it would probably be easier and more economical if we shared food and meals, because it's really easier to cook for two people instead of one. The first few nights (after we actually finally bought groceries) we ate a lot of pasta. A LOT of pasta. And toast and cereal. Then I finally got eggs and bacon. Recently, on Tuesday we went for fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn-Alex made the corn and mashed potatoes, [View Full Entry]

An Irish Wedding Europe » Ireland » County Galway
I have heard stories about Irish weddings and how no American wedding could ever compare and after experiencing one, I can say that is true. The wedding had an early start at 12:30 though we had a late start getting to the church at 1:30 just in time for another hour of the ceremony. Being that it was cold and rainy, we had to go to the pub and being that we were in a pub, we had to have a drink to start off the whole rest of the night. After a few hot whiskeys, we headed to the hotel [View Full Entry]

Ready for the shots

I can't keep starting entries with "well", it could so easily get out of control! I've continued to hang out with the same Irish boys, and more of their friends, and we are continually learning about each others' cultures. They are very concerned with their masculinity and fairly homophobic, but that's all in line with Ireland's conservativism (hope that's a word). We've had endless entertainment finding words that we say differently, or things that we have different names for. I have two favorites so far-instead of saying fillet properly, they say it like "fill it"-utterly ridiculous-and [View Full Entry]

Well I am really quite tired at the moment. Tired because of work (which is alright) but mostly tired of people condeming me and of Christians putting me down. HOWEVER, I thank you all friends for your amazing uplifting words...Thank you Mum, Sam, Troy, Mandy, Jurek, Amanda, Hector, Tom, Peter...WOW! (and everyone else that I didn't mention, you know who you are!) Just all of you who have encouraged me and loved me no matter what I tell you. More and more I am turning to God, the devil will not have victory over me in Ireland or anywhere in the [View Full Entry]

Hello! Only 2 weeks and 5 days till the Big departure (Amanda's and Yvonne's second last Thursday ever in Siemens - well for a while anyway!) We will be starting this blog properly when we leave and there is actually something to write about but for now we just wanted to share with ye our route ( I can tell ye are dying with anticipation!) I hope that the link below will bring ye to it. However being a wee bit technologically challenged I can't guarantee that it will work at all! http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_AJ.html [View Full Entry]

Well I said I'd talk about school in this entry, but i haven't actually had a class yet, so there's really nothing to say! Two of my classes don't start for two weeks, I tried to go to one yesterday but it was just an info session that i'd already been to, so i left, and I think i have at least one class tomorrow, so we'll see about that. None of the classes meet for more than two hours a week. Thats right. two hours. But moving on to more exciting things... We decided with our Beloit girls downstairs that [View Full Entry]
