''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

This weekend on a whim I decided to book at coach tour of Galway and the Burren area after discovering a daily tour through Rick Steve's guide book. The tour is O'Neactain tours. My guide's name was Desmond Murray and he was wonderful despite the thick fog, which destroyed much of our morning view. The greatest part of the trip was seeing Poulnabrone Dolmen/portal tomb and also seeing the Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs were also misted in fog and each layer of cliff appeared a different hue of blue. It was quite beautiful. Lunch was at a pub in Doolin [View Full Entry]

Dave's Christmas present from his family was a long weekend in Dublin. What better person could he think to take along with him, but the lovely Nicola. Our favourite things in Dublin were the Guiness factory, Johnny Foxes (thanks to Shelly and Jimmy for taking us up there), the Gaol and its moving political history, and our trip down the coast to Dun Learghy. Dublin was lots of fun and Dave is lucky enough to be heading back for a work trip (one night) next week. [View Full Entry]

This past weekend I did an exhaustive excursion of Co. Kilkenny. I started at a hostel in Kilkenny City and explored the City Centre and surrounding area. I saw I toured all the main buildings and attractions of Kilkenny City including several cathedrals and the Kilkenny Castle and art gallery. I dined at Chez Pierre French restaurant across from the hostel where I was staying. That evening at the hostel I spoke with a French girl in my room about where I wanted to travel in Kilkenny and my fascination with all the archaeology sites. We shared some cookies and wine [View Full Entry]

Hi! I had a wonderful trip to Dublin last weekend with Liz, Amanda S. and Amanda B. We left on Thursday and spent three nights there. We stayed at a lodge (basically a bed and breakfast) because all of the hostels were booked. It ended up working out really well and was really nice. We will probably never stay in that nice of a place again so we enjoyed it. On the flight to Dublin we realized why everything was booked for the weekend. There was a 6 Nation Rugby Cup and Ireland was playing Italy on the Saturday we were [View Full Entry]

"How was Dublin?" you ask. Well, it was great, just watch out for the bikes. I arrived in Dublin on Monday night, and went pubbing with a girl I met on the bus from Glasgow. Had a few pints, checked out the local music, all that sort of thing. Had a late night, a slow morning, and did the art gallery/poking around town bit in the afternoon. Joel arrived in the evening, my friend went to a music rehearsal, and Joel and I had a quiet evening to be well rested for Wednesday, which we hoped would be a long day [View Full Entry]

During our last installment, we left you in Glasgow without any idea for our next stop. Just so you know, we went to Northern Ireland after that, and here's how it went: First, I know you're wondering about the pleasant company of dead people at the Necropolis in Glasgow. Well, they were great, but they didn't say much. Either which way, we decided to make our move to Northern Ireland. We hopped on a bus from Glasgow to Stranraer, caught a ferry from there to Belfast, then settled down in a hostel near the city center. The ferry from Stranraer to [View Full Entry]

On most days, there are huge swans on the river Corrib-ya know, the river that runs right next to my housing, beside which is the path that I walk every day to get to class or elsewhere. Yes, it is badass. My Corrib Village ID card is a seriously ghetto-laminated piece of paper with my Beloit application picture stuck in, and my name scrawled across in someone else's handwriting. The lamination is already coming apart. Classic. If you pet a stray dog, it WILL follow you home in the cutest way possible. Wagging and smiling and nuzzling your hand occasionally. Hey Guys, This is our trip to Dublin, Michael and I went for our six year anniversary. Beautiful city but very expensive. And apparently the Guiness is better there than anywhere else. Just ask Michael, he got absolutely wasted on the stuff!! Which is why I couldn't keep him off the statues. [View Full Entry]
