''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

After two sleepless nights in transit I have arrived on the old sod. Tuesday night was my last leg on AMTRAK in a car the conductors had managed to heat to 80 degrees or more (trying to sleep that is). After a day of walking around Atlanta, a very pedestrian unfriendly place, I jumped on the plane to Ireland. I have been here almost 12 hours and so far I have slept, taken an amazing hot shower, and found food. Not bad. I am happy to find that the people are as nice as I remember, the weather is cold and [View Full Entry]

Beep...Beep...BEEP 4am and my phone alarm is buzzing away like its cool to be waking up at 4am on a Thursday morning. Not only is it early, but its freezing. When I open the curtains the windows are covered in frost and its still pitch black outside. A burst of excitement rushes through me as I know I'm up this early for a reason... I'm off to IRELAND! I stand like a withering feotus in the shower waiting for the water to warm up but when it does I get showered and prepped for a backpacking trip around Ireland. Speeding through [View Full Entry]

So hey! I know this isn't big traveling or anything, but I just had to write about my awesome night last night! I went into Dublin with a group of buddies and we hit the city high-class style! We started the night at a famous micro-brewery called The Porterhouse where I was able to sample their three best stouts. One was a chocolate brew and it was absolutely delicious! It seriously tasted like straight chocolate! But moving on from the brewery we went to Murphy's Laughter House where we were 'giggled' by a Scotsman and two Irish...and boy were they characters. I just returned from the Connemara trip with the International Society. There were around 30 Mary I students in all from Belgium, France, Argentina, Austria and America (Frostburg: Maryland, Thomas More: Cinncinatti and Longwood: Virginia). The French are the predominant student population with Americans at a close second. I finally met and got to know most of the other internationals pretty well and attempt to speak French and Spanish with them. Okay, so on to the gorgeous, breathtaking and beautiful scenery in Connemara!! Connemara is north of Galway City and is filled with loughs, lakes, [View Full Entry]

Accomodation in Mountains

Wow... ok, so I need to do some major backtrackin' here so... take your time reading this! Friday night, I hitched up to the concert. It was an awesome experience. It was like a music concert put on by a school, but rather, a community. Youth and adults preformed and everyone was so happy. It was a great thing to experience, but it did go a little longer than I was able to sit comfortably for! The Bose speaker system set up in this awesome community center really made things sound amazing! The other thing I loved is how, while people [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! So oh my gosh - I'm in Ireland!!! It still doesn't feel real, although I feel right at home here. This place is truly amazing and although I feel so at home, it still feels like a different country. In fact, I've been keeping a list of all the differences and some of my experiences. But yeah, so the first few days were definitely the highlights so far. I stayed in a hostel in Galway for the first four days, along with a fellow American studying at Maynooth Kate, and we just had the times of our lives. The [View Full Entry]

This past weekend I went to Youghal (pronounced Yawl) and Cobh (pronounced Cove) in East Co. Cork. I stayed Friday night at Evergreen House in Youghal. It was really lovely. A family lived in one part of it and rented rooms in the other part. There was a four-year old girl named Ella, a ballerina, and a two-year old named Oscar, who wore a little monkey hat. They had a really nice garden and the house was right against the ocean. It was cold and windy Saturday morning, but wandering around the beach of Youghal was just beautiful. Hey all... no don't worry, I'm well and alive here and lovin' life... you'll see what I mean... Yesterday, I walked about 15 minutes to go do my own laundry (most laundry is done for you here). I got there and this cute little old lady said to me "Ya heev yur powder do ya?"... Doh! Forgot my freakin' "powder" so I had to walk all the way back to get it and then back again with the detergent. She was cute though so! So, I BOUGHT MY FLUTE. I'm super excited. I picked up the rest of the little "trinkets" [View Full Entry]

So, after lunch, on Tuesday, Bruno and I headed out to the water to look at the swans. So fun. There was this asian girl dancing to a man playing the flute. She was so funny... a boy ran up and started dancing with her, got embarrassed and ran away and she chaced him. The funniest part is that I captured the whole thing on video... kind of like a silent video. So fun! I walked bruno to the bus stop... forgot what it was like to say goodbye. Spent some time on the internet and then went out for some [View Full Entry]

Ha... last night was awesome. I met the guys staying in my room. Two awesome frenchmen. The first I met was Bruno (I totally can't say his name right with that rrrrrrrrr in the back of the throte thing, but I really tried). When I met him, he was very excited about his new penny whistle he had just bought in Doolin so... I had just read about a session for ABSOLUTE beginners. I asked him if he wanted to join me and soon after that, we headed to the Crane bar on the other side of the bridge. Now, we [View Full Entry]
