Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian Boru defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties. To Be Updated

Day 25, Friday June 16: Dublin to (London)Derry On Friday, I met up with my new backpacking group and we headed to Northern Ireland, officially part of the UK, not the Republic of Ireland.. This is obviously a tense political subject with the people here and as recently as 1998, there were regular killings and bombing in N.Ireland, until the cease fire agreement.. Quickly it comes down to Protestants vs Catholics, or the British supporters vs the Ireland supporters. Both feel very strongly about who they should be ruled under and show themselves (Derry is divided by the river), British fla [View Full Entry]

Who would have known you were suppose to study on study abroad? Well I have been doing a lot of studing today, but I have learned a lot about Roscommon Castle, sadly a lot of the history is missing as well, so you'll have to fill in the blanks on your own. Roscommon Castle was first built by Robert de Ufford in 1269. The castle was three stories high with a quadrangular shape and four towers in the corners. Ufford only owned the castle for seven years until Hugh O'Conor, who was King of Connacht, came in and took over. O’Conor [View Full Entry]

Ireland

So, I'm afraid today wasn't very interesting. We packed up all our stuff and checked out of Aviemore. 2 hours down the motorway and we were in Edinburgh. A couple of hours and a short flight later, we were standing in Dublin with the rental keys in our hot little hands. Where to? Was the question. 11 days, 1 island, no plans. so we journeyed south. Horrible, Horrible idea, straight into rush hour traffic. I figured mum needed to get off the road pretty fast, so we spent our first night in Ireland at this gorgeous B&B near the beach. Well, another phase of the trip has come and gone. I just saw Mike off to the airport bus and Mat left earlier this morning. At this point I’m feeling like I have put some miles under my feet. From Paris to Montgaillard to Bordeaux to Pau to Biarritz to the Pyrenees to San Sebastian to Barcelona’s L’Eixample, Ciutat Vella, Montjuic, and Barceloneta to Shannon to Limerick to Cork to Killarney to Dublin. I think I’m learning to enjoy the journey and the pleasure of movement, and to relish the expectation of the next destination as much as the memory of [View Full Entry]

This is the view from the outside.
I am too tired to go into to much detail, but this castle was pretty awsome! It was out in the middle a field and we just drove up to it. Then we just walked right into it and no one was around. On top of all that we got to climb all over it! It was pretty freakin' awsome! I didn't want to leave, but we had too. : ( [View Full Entry]

Well on Sunday night there was a huge fire in the downtown part of Galway which spread really quickly reaching the Village that we were staying at. It wasn't until one of the students was awoken by the sounds of the alarms from the fire trucks that we knew the fire was happening. The student got out of bed and saw the fire which was almost right on top of the Village. He then started screaming through the halls trying to wake everyone and get them out of the building. Well in the mad rush of things it eventually woke the [View Full Entry]
