Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian Boru defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties. To Be Updated

Killarney

Here I am in beautiful Killarney...its so nice here...probably due to its small town-esque. I have decided on this trip that the big towns are just not me. I think deep down I was just a tree hugging hippie...wait what am i saying! So yesterday since it was supposed to rain (do they really need to provide a forecast here?) I decided to be nice and warm on a bus tour of the ring of kerry. Quite beautiful actually. Too bad I could hardly understand the tour guide. The bus was chock full of Americans who had not a clue what [View Full Entry]

Hello again my faithful followers. So as if I thought Spain couldn't get any better, it did. I had the best day of the trip (if not my life) on Tuesday. It consisted of hiking into complete beauty in the middle of nowhere in Basque country. I was told I am probably the only American who has ever stepped foot on this soil. (right after that I saw some kids with a fraternity sweatshirt on...jerks!) So beautiful. The rest of the day consisted of a home cooked meal of steak (wait...what!!!), vegetables (which i haven't eaten in 2 months) and wine [View Full Entry]

I first heard about Couchsurfing.com from this American guy I met in Spain. It sounded so crazy, that I had to check it out. ---- Thursday night. Dave whom I've met through Couchsurfing, meets me at the airport. I think it amazing how an absolute stranger can be so generous and hospitable. You spend five minutes with him and you think you've known him for years. We go out to town. I try my first Irish Guinness. I like the feeling of doing something for the very first time. We go to a club. Dublin people are nice - friendly, conservative [View Full Entry]

Leaving the Dubs in one day. I am so psyched about leaving because I miss the sunshine soooo much and can't wait to get color back into this skin. When my friends ask for pic's of me I send them black and whites so they can't really tell how white I am. haha, just kidding. ahem A little while ago I took a three day tour of the North of Ireland. It was incredible! These events were only ones that took place on the pages of history books and movies for me...until I went. It was incredible, did I say that [View Full Entry]

It won't be long now It's just gone 1.30pm and this time next week we'll be on the alter in Clara Church in in Kilkenny and possibly saying our vows to each other. Then it's a big party and off for the honeymoon on Sunday 13th November! We can't wait and look forward to seeing you all on our big day As Oscar Wilde said... He was always late on principle, his principle being that punctuality is the thief of time What I have to do before the big day * Write my Speech * Stay Mentally and Physically fit * [View Full Entry]

"Depend on the rabbit's foot if you will, but remember it didn't work for the rabbit." Any logical person would understand that the misfortunes I have experienced thus far on my journey are the result of my own lack of skill, ability, and knowledge. I am not a logical person. I believe it is bad luck. I have been cursed. Though my understanding of the mystical realm is a little shaky, one of my students told me that the only way to reverse a curse of bad luck, is to catch and eat a leprechaun. My trip to Ireland was about [View Full Entry]

Hey, hey, HEY!!! Life is precious and sweet... Yesterday was one of the coolest days I've had! ;-) It was spent just chillin' with some really cool friends at the Dublin Zoo. What a place to get to! My goodness, we spent at least two hours trying to get TO the zoo...but it was also the funnest part, lol. This cool Aussie guy named Grant came and then there was Luke (the Kiwi I work with) Peter and Aussie pal as well and this English dude named Jack who for some reason I would like to call Jacque. heh. Ah it [View Full Entry]

Tomorrow night it is time to say goodbye to IReland Entirely!.. our bus leaves at 4 am to go to our ryan air flight to Edinburgh Scotland. Our dilemma tonight would be that ryan air flights only allow 1 bag 30 lbs only (before leaving home we each were allowed 2 bags, 60 lb capacity so u could imagine how much luggage we already had, not too add everything we had bought in ireland already).. anything else would make us have to pay overage charges.. Well.. we didnt want that to happen so professor sands said that we had to shove [View Full Entry]

Night out in Dublin

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
Absinthe=trouble Vodka and red bull= trouble.. Ok so last night was unbeleiveable. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Ok so in our hostel we did shots of absinthe, which NOOO u do not hallucinate off of it. u just get extremely happy. And then Dvora and I decided to get a bottle of vodka and mix it with red bull. Everyone was sick and tired of waiting for us to get done finishing the bottle, so we had to take it with us. It was a crazy night in Dublin with Halloween coming upon us. Scooby Doo and a dude were out in the streets. The [View Full Entry]
