''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

When Pig's Fly... Back to Czech Pepa Pig was having a really hard time with being in Dublin. He was working a job he hated and barely making enough money to pay his bills. He decided that it was time to go back to Prague and find a better job so that he will be able to save some money so that he can eventually move to Vancouver in 2010 for 1 year. Much like Felippe, the hard edges of the Dublin Irish was really really really hard for Pepa to get used to. He was tired of being in [View Full Entry]

We crammed 6 people and like 12 bags into a Euro-style minivan, an Opel Zafira, and starting driving south from Dublin. My dad Howie had to quickly learn how to drive on the left side of the road and in a stick shift car, no easy task. I may have pooped myself a few times along the way, because a lot of the country roads were tiny. Along the road south, we stopped in Kilkenny (great name) to explore the small-towniness of it and to see the Castle Greens. The next two days were spent exploring Cork in the south of [View Full Entry]

(I posted an entry yesterday but did not send out the emails.) What a great night! We were among the first people let into the concert and the first to buy our t-shirts. Croke Park is huge - holds 80 000 people. It is a rugby pitch. The pitch had to be removed for the concert and U2 had to pay to put in the new pitch once the concerts are over. Approx. cost of the new pitch is 1 million. Concert was even better than you could imagine. The crowd was amazing, on their feet screaming even before U2 hit [View Full Entry]

So I've been sick for a little over a week now. It started with like a 48 hour flu type thing, then I felt better for a couple days, then I got one of the worst soar throats of my life, and by the time that Theresa and Cassandra got here I could barely talk. I actually lost my voice for the first time in my life. It was mostly annoying and really painful, but KINDA cool at the same time :). Because I've been sick though, I haven't really worked for a week. As many of you may have noticed, [View Full Entry]

No regrets about Ireland! We had such a good time here. Arriving last Saturday, we had two full days of exploring the city of Dublin by ourselves before meeting up with the Beckies. Backing up for a minute, our flight in from RyanAir was absolutely terrifying; at one point, the entire plane screamed when the plane dropped suddenly. However, we arrived, happy to be alive. During our two days of Dublin discovery, we checked out several national buildings of Irish pride. First stop, was the National Museum of Ireland. Here, we checked out a "dead zoo", only to be creeped on [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Dublin on Sunday. We are staying on the campus of Dublin City University (DCU), which is about 3-4 miles north of the center of Dublin. There’s so much to say about Dublin, but for now I’ll just share some photos and thoughts on the places we have visited that relate to the most important event in 20th century Irish history, the Easter Rising of 1916. The most important place in this regard is the Kilmainham jail. If you don’t know about the 1916 Easter Rising, and the subsequent War for Independence in Ireland, I highly recommend that you [View Full Entry]

I had a very relaxing day yesterday as 4.5 hours were spent on the train. On my train from Belfast to Dublin I met a local Dubliner. She was an architect and had been working for the day in Belfast. She was a wealth of knowledge about many things. She offered to share her taxi with me as my hostel was on the way. The best part was that she was expensing the taxi so it was free! Alice and the taxi driver got in a great discussion about life in Northern Ireland during the uprising. She was from the north [View Full Entry]

We left Galway last Sunday, and I have to say I was sorry to go. Galway is a great city, welcoming and easy to get to know. The population is now around 70,000, if you count the growing suburbs, but the feel is of a much smaller place. From our accommodations, it was less than a 30-minute walk to the city center, along very pleasant, friendly streets. Eyre Square is a large open square right in the center of town. The park there was rechristened John F. Kennedy Memorial park in honor of JFK’s visit to Ireland and Galway in the [View Full Entry]

Hi Ruthie, you will be happy to hear I have escaped from my nasty captors and I am now on the run. I am so lucky to have survived and I am sharing some pictures of my horrendous experience with those nasty captors. I must share the following from that experience: Every night, Harold would go down to the liquor store, get a six pack, bring it home, and drink it while he watched TV. He would become very drunk and begin to stretch me, Stand on me throw me against walls, fling me round the room. I am sure you [View Full Entry]
