''...the green and troubled land of
tourist brochures and news headlines.''

Quote from: Ireland, A Novel by Frank Delaney

Warmed and cooled by the North Atlantic stream and location respectively, Ireland is never extremely cold or extremely hot.

This celtic isle is stoney grey, rugged mountains, cliffs and dewy greenness. Windswept and misty, you will likely need an umbrella anytime.

From the ring of Kerry to the tatched cottages of Conamera to the Giants Causeway, may the road rise to meet you and may your hassles be small ones.

Ireland has folklore, lively music, dance and haunting ballads. Kiss the Blarney stone and join the locals in one of the pubs which outnumber just about everything for a pint of black and tan, or ten. Then rise up yer skirts and kick up yer heals for a bit of mighty craic with fiddles, harps, jigs and reels.

My first break on the way
So I have now finished the first of many treks to come. Probably not the most challenginf trek in the world but proved quite tough for me and also gave me some insight in how it will be to travel the world with over 20kgs onmy back. I am now in quite some pain from blisters and muscle pain in my legs!!! So myself and Steven started from Crone car park in Glencree where we head for Djouce Mountain in Wicklow (725m).As this was my first tough trek with weight it prved quite stressfull. We must of takin our first break [View Full Entry]

Had a wonderful sleep and even better breakfast. This morning I ordered the traditional Irish breakfast. The black pudding was excellent. Left Rivermount House at 9am and headed along the coast, stopping at each town along the way. I avoided the beara peninsula and made it to Kenmare, which is just south of the Ring of Kerry. This is about a 180km loop around the Iveragh Peninsula. I ascended to a lookout point and stopped for some photos. I have been stopping quite often to take pictures of the changing landscape. If I keep this up all day then I will [View Full Entry]

Rivermount House is simply stunning. The magnificent residence is perched on the side of the hill overlooking the valley. Not long after signing off yesterday, the weather came in and the view disappeared. It rained all night, not that I really know with the double glazing and quiet rooms. Breakfast was unsurpassed, a cooked breakfast with all the trimmings, with full dinner service and cutlery. After breakfast I packed up and headed outside. Whilst it looked as if it was raining, it was actually just low cloud. The cloud that skips by the top of lofty, but here is drifts along [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! We thought we would do something a little different this time. This is Brittany, Steph’s brother (Pat)’s girlfriend, writing. That sounds more complicated than it is! Anyway, Pat and I had the incredible opportunity to spend 3 weeks traveling with Steph and Alexis in Ireland and Scotland. We thought that we would write this blog and give you a glimpse into Steph and Alexis’ lives from an outsider’s perspective. Unfortunately we didn't manage to finish this before Steph and Alexis got back, and we recognize that many of you will already have seen them [View Full Entry]

After a fine breakfast at Trinity College, I was allowed to sneak some fruit from the fruit bar (the guy liked me I guess). Checked out and walked to where to hire the car. All hired, a Blue Ford Focus, left Dublin and drove south along the motorway (allowed to do 120km/hr). Turned south at Port Laoirse (which is strange as its not on the coast - go figure) and headed through Kilkenny, Callan and onto Clonmel. Arrived at my destination in Kinsale and the most lovely B&B. It is just amazing. Rivermount House is perched on the hill overlooking the [View Full Entry]

Flew from Gatwick to Dublin today on Ryanair. Many thanks to Mark and Charly for getting me there on time. Ryanair was a little delayed and was the only flight on the board of 50 flights that didnt have a gate allocated. I wasnt nervous at all. It was the first big flight i had been on where there were no seats allocated. i was about 8th in the queue, so got a window seat in the third row. flight was good, got the Airlink to Dublin city and found Trinity college ok. Room is small but quite adequate. Wandered around [View Full Entry]

I didn’t really have a plan for what I was going to do in Ireland. I just knew that I wanted to pop over and see my gran in Boyle (in Roscommon in the west of Ireland) before heading on our big trip. I couldn’t have picked a better time to visit - it was Boyle Arts Festival and my lovely aunty Martina had a whole schedule planned. She picked me up from the train station and said “right - you’ll have your dinner with your granny and then I’ll pick you up at 7.30 for a photography lecture, then maybe [View Full Entry]

The Party Bus
the session in Limerick

Just tried online checking with Aer Lingus, only to find out that I can't because I booked my travel through a travel agent. Why? because the trip was too complex for the Aer Lingus system on one ticket. When I ask to speak to csutomer services... I'm told I have to write to them! What service is this? [View Full Entry]

Bar Pintxo
Bar Pintxo
pronounced "Pin-cho"
Perhaps my favorite day of work was today- wanna guess why it was my favorite? Probably because it was the first time I was cooking in a kitchen since I've been here. Not only that, but I was talking to someone who truly cared about food and how it was prepared and presented. I was only there for a few hours before they opened, helping Karl (who's name is deceiving for being Argentinian with above average English but a pretty confusing accent), Bar Pintxo's head chef, do prep for the day, doing simple things like cut eggplant, shred lettuce, etc. but [View Full Entry]
