GALWY
Across from MORAN'S OYSTER HOUSE
Thursday started out fine. Mary, Pat and I headed out to Galway for lunch at Moran' s Oyster Cottage outside of Clarenbridge. The highways in Ireland are great and we left Tullamore around 10:45 and arrived at the weir around 12:30. It was a beautiful sunny day. The cottage looked as we remembered it and we were all pleased to see them doing a fine business. The Moran family nearly lost the restaurant during the crisis due to bad investments but this season was the best ever according to the owner's wife.
Pat and I had salmon and potato cakes and then steamed mussels. Outrageous, fresh and tender! Mary had a grilled sandwich that she declared delicious. We were back home by four and just chilled for the evening. Mariam stopped by and we settled in the sitting room for a drink before I headed up to bed.
Friday, the ladies who lunch headed to the Red Earth Restaurant for another grand lunch, relaxed for a while and then headed to Teresa and Dominick's for dinner. They have remodeled their kitchen since we were last there and it is large and modern. It is beautiful but I
MORAN'S
Lunch time think I preferred the old one, cozy with a wood burning brick fireplace. It was my idea of a modern Irish kitchen. The new expanded one is lovely with a wood burning stove in the sitting area. Dominick had a turf fire going, my first ever. We were all warm and relaxed.
We took a taxi out and back so we could all have wine with dinner and not to worry about the Garda who patrol this road heavily. We headed back around 10 and discovered that neither Mick or Mary had their a keys. We had to wake up Liam to come and let us in. Needless to say he wasn't real happy to see us.
Headed to the sitting room, turned on the TV and Pat noticed that the date was October 11. "Aren't we flying home on the 12th" she asked.? I was certain we were leaving on Sunday, not Saturday. Darn, drat and damn we were leaving the next morning at 8:55 am.
At 11:55 we were packing up and shortly after 12 we were on the road to Dublin. Checked in our hotel at 2:10 am, put in a wake up call
for 5 and collapsed. Got up, gassed up the car, returned it, checked in, went through security (long lines), had to wait for US customs and immigration to open ( short lines, pokey people), then went through US security (the other Euro group security) and finally boarded the full flight. I am dreaming of my comfy bed as we approach NYC. I can still see Mary standing at the door in shock and Mick helping us to load the car and give last minute directions. We never had the chance to thank them properly and I can only hope they know how much we love them and appreciate their friendship and hospitality.
The road home was long with traffic backups on the Belt, route 95 and the Merritt. The driver finally had to take the back roads to get me home. Still, it was a warm, sunny fall day and the leaves are beginning to turn so I just sat back and enjoyed the views. Home at 2:30 to a loving welcome from Joe and Moseby. It was a great trip with wonderful people, still it is always good to be home.
