What a great Full Irish Breakfast cook David is. We drove a tiny road up and over the hills behind us to Camp, on the n. side of the narrow peninsula. Lovely views and SHEEP all over. We meant to take the Conor pass but accidently took another and brought ourselves to the south side at Inch again. Oh well. Saw the pub where Antarctic explorer lived and worked. That was the best weather of the day - as you can see when we are "in the clouds" the rest of the day. NOT RAIN = let's be clear about that. stopped at stone aged "beehive huts" - went in 2. One had a "subterrain" passage to the outside. Very well fortified. PreChristian. We did see some referenced landmarks, but never saw the Great Blasket island, ... read more

We've not been online for a few days - explaining later. But back on the 6th we awoke from wonderful sleeps to have David cook our full Irish breakfasts from the supplies that Joanna had laid up for us - FRESH eggs from her chickens even. Headed out to Cobh to learn about the Titanic. As we had learned this was a "bank holiday" weekend, we expected crowds, but now we see an enormous LINER!!!! in the port. Evidently this tiny town of Cobh has one of the best deep harbors in the world. We had to park WAY way up the hill (only about 3 blocks walk but all hill) near St. Colman's Cathedral (we are going to have our own little Sunday service tonight, as we couldn't decide on any church - some with ... read more

Before we came to Ireland people who had been here had told us to make sure we did the “Ring of Kerry”. Well, we did. Taking nothing away from the RoK it must be said that most countries have their own RoK that encapsulates beauty, ruggedness, pristine scenery and the like. The RoK winds (very in places) past beaches, medieval ruins, mountains and lakes with ever changing views of the Atlantic. We endeavoured to get off the beaten track whenever we could so as to get out and smell, listen to and touch the forest trees in the quietness that only a moisture soaked forest can give. Sitting amongst tall trees, trunks and branches, covered in thick green moss, watching, listening to and photographing secluded streams flowing over smooth rocks, was what we enjoyed the most. ... read more

The day began for me with an early morning walk along the lanes of Croagh and into the small community park with a running stream. The sky was overcast and drizzling rain. Loved it. Moved onto Listowel where we had breakfast at Lynch'e Coffee Shop before walking, still in drizzle, a few of the streets, taking photos of some of the buildings. In June there will be a walk through the streets to admire the striking and colourful shop frontages, many of which have unique designs and were created in the 1800's. I'm not too sure whether the buildings chosen by me will feature. On Jane's suggestion we visited the "Kerry Literary and Cultural Centre", where we spent time enjoying learning about the great writers such as Keane, Kennelly, Walsh, Fitzmaurice and MacMahon from this part ... read more

"Irish Golfing... it's so peaceful you don't even care where the ball is going." - Chad Maulsby, "The Wandering Golfer" Our final day in County Kerry touring was a wonderful day of surprises which included sunshine and clearance-sales tables. We split into two groups: Those who wanted to chase a white ball around a golf course through the green countryside and blue skies & those of us who wanted to explore the sales racks in Killarney. Success! for both group. The afternoon in Killarney was a walking journey with a walking tour through the amazing Cathedral, into the red deer stag "love zone", carriage rides and an amazing dinner!! Today was the day that felt like we'd stepped into a storybook. Really!!! We dont want to ... read more

Ben Franklin said: Lost time is never found again. That also applies to eyewear! What a beautiful rainy day to head into Killarney and visit the top half of the Ring of Kerry adventure. We decided to repeat our good fortune from Dingle and hire another Taxi/Tour guide. Welcome Shiela! thank you for showing us the pure excitement of driving the thin roads of Killarney National Park. We started with a trip past the red deer stag-grounds, past rivers/bridges and then to a mountainview that went on into the horizon. We stopped at Ladies View, and Shiela shared stories of the Queens visit, her ladies in waiting, and a recen... read more

"may your coffin be made from strong solid 100-year old wood made from the mightiest of trees, that is planted today!" Irish Toast A journey west to the town of Dingle, had the two cars stopping at the beach to witness the mighty blowing winds & overcast clouds challenge the two surfing classes in training. Each student in their "warm suit" intently focused on the instructions from the surf-teacher, sitting on the beach shivering. Oh Dingle, we love you already and we still have another 40 minute drive to the center of town. A brilliant idea that we acted upon: Hire tour guide Colm to show us around the Slea Head Loop, and enjoy his stories and the beauty which is Dingle Peninsula. His oversize 8-person taxi was equipped with a sound system that allowed the ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Castlemaine October 22nd 2017

To County Kerry we go! Dingle Peninsula, Castlemaine, and Killarney & then just add the beauty of the Ring of Kerry's/ Killarney's National Park. We'll spend 4 whole days in one location and we'll be well-attended to by (Mary #1, #2, & #3) at the Murphy Farmhouse. Ya know its gonna be a great time, when you walk into the Pub (sun hasn't set yet) and the Bachelor Party is in full swing! Beautiful Mary is our waitress (not Murphy, but Griffin). The Bachelor party is really giving her a hard time, so she is extra happy to see smiling faces from America. She's really very pretty and speaks softly with a sing-song tone to her voice. I couldn't help myself, "Mary, you should meet my handsome american son, although right now he's in NZ" I ... read more

Day 4 Tarbert The wind, the wind. Oh! It was ferocious all day and in our face. We had a very good full Irish breakfast, well most of us did, which put us off to a good start. A short decent was followed by a steep climb needing more gears than most of us had, and those that had them were struggling to hold the front end down. As we looked to our left we saw Doonagore castle, built in the 16th century as a stronghold from marauders with its walled enclosure. Currrntly owned by an an Irish American John Gorman. The next feature was the Cliffs of Moher just a few km down the road and well worth a brief stop. Next stop after Spanish Point was Quilty for a brew and a cake at ... read more
