Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Dory had to leave home at 5:30 a.m. and all of her roommates had gone home for the weekend, so we left with her, and hung out around Galway. We were going to crash at the bus station, but it was closed, so instead we sort of wandered around, because it was too cold to sit down! The grocery store opened at 7:00 a.m. and we purchased some things from there for lunch, then wandered around some more. There is a small farmer's market every Saturday morning in Galway, but it doesn't set up very early. One of the venders was [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Galway City and Dory met us near the bus station. Galway is a very young, college town. The vast majority of the population in under the age of 25. The city is located on a bay of the Atlantic Ocean, there is a river running through town, and man-made canals that branch off of it. Fishing and other sea-related jobs are prominent there. So is the sea food. Anyway, we first took all of our baggage to Dory's apartment. She lives with four Irish girls in Campus housing. Her University is located in the NorthWestern part of Galway, [View Full Entry]

Looking back, Galway was one of my favorite stops on the entire trip. It was a very artsy and musical college town that immediately made me feel at ease. The scenery was beautiful, but the beautiful spirit of the people there is really what made this place shine. I think I'll let the pictures and captions speak for themselves on this one... March 14th...we were packing it up and ready to leave London when I realized that my credit card was missing. And shortly thereafter I found out that it had been maxed out by someone trying to buy computer equipment and a $400 pair of boots. But Ireland was a-callin' and I couldn't wait to get there. After our $30 flight to Shannon Airport and a long bus ride, Kyle, Thompson and I found ourselves in Galway. Ireland was just as green as I had imagined, with fields of sheep just as I had imagined--corraled by aged stone fences...just as I [View Full Entry]

Waking at 9.30am I realised I had about half an hour to shower, get changed and take advantage off the complimentry brekfast, then another half hour to get checked out and get to the bus station where I needed to get the bus to a place galled Galway. 4 hours North, on the tip off the Atlantic Ocean. On top off that my head hurts. After gulping my Marmolade and Toast I headed out to the bus... which I missed... by about 20minutes. I had 2 hours to spare untill the next one. I headed over to a huge church (religion [View Full Entry]

I just returned from the Connemara trip with the International Society. There were around 30 Mary I students in all from Belgium, France, Argentina, Austria and America (Frostburg: Maryland, Thomas More: Cinncinatti and Longwood: Virginia). The French are the predominant student population with Americans at a close second. I finally met and got to know most of the other internationals pretty well and attempt to speak French and Spanish with them. Okay, so on to the gorgeous, breathtaking and beautiful scenery in Connemara!! Connemara is north of Galway City and is filled with loughs, lakes, [View Full Entry]

Accomodation in Mountains

Hello everyone! So oh my gosh - I'm in Ireland!!! It still doesn't feel real, although I feel right at home here. This place is truly amazing and although I feel so at home, it still feels like a different country. In fact, I've been keeping a list of all the differences and some of my experiences. But yeah, so the first few days were definitely the highlights so far. I stayed in a hostel in Galway for the first four days, along with a fellow American studying at Maynooth Kate, and we just had the times of our lives. The [View Full Entry]

So, after lunch, on Tuesday, Bruno and I headed out to the water to look at the swans. So fun. There was this asian girl dancing to a man playing the flute. She was so funny... a boy ran up and started dancing with her, got embarrassed and ran away and she chaced him. The funniest part is that I captured the whole thing on video... kind of like a silent video. So fun! I walked bruno to the bus stop... forgot what it was like to say goodbye. Spent some time on the internet and then went out for some [View Full Entry]

Ha... last night was awesome. I met the guys staying in my room. Two awesome frenchmen. The first I met was Bruno (I totally can't say his name right with that rrrrrrrrr in the back of the throte thing, but I really tried). When I met him, he was very excited about his new penny whistle he had just bought in Doolin so... I had just read about a session for ABSOLUTE beginners. I asked him if he wanted to join me and soon after that, we headed to the Crane bar on the other side of the bridge. Now, we [View Full Entry]
