Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Meet my friends! Hey guys! Sorry it's been a little while since my last post, but needless to say I've been super busy and having LOTS of fun! This post will have some pictures of my new friends and my most recent new experiment...cooking! After lots of phone calls to my mom I finally figured out how to make a pretty good stir fry (I didn't know how to cook the chicken) AND I put together some homemade tacos for my roommates. Believe it or not everything actually turned out great (just ask Fede, she liked it!). Well, I feel [View Full Entry]

So this is our first blog entry and it'll be short because im hardly fit to compose sentences after last night. It was a great night. Seamus brought a few from our team out for dinner in Cookes (yum!!). After we were nicely dined and wined we headed to Buskers to join Jacinta and anyone else who had showed up. Well! By god was i embarrassed we had reserved an area! The bar was practically empty! Down by the back where we had reserved a few had gathered and it quickly filled up. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to [View Full Entry]

Whats so funny?

This past weekend I went with the international club at school to Galway. It is a great town on the west coast filled with fun pubs. On Saturday we took a ferry to the Gaelic speaking island of Irishmore, part of the Aran Islands. The island is scattered with thatched roofs and numerous rock walls. My friends and I eventually climbed to the top of the island and had an amazing view of the island's cliffs. We also saw our fair share of sheep which provide the wool for Ireland's well-known Aran sweaters. On Sunday the group went to see the [View Full Entry]

Strep throat, Grilled Cupcakes, and Spiderman Today I spent 3 hours at the clinic.........but they gave me drugs, YAY! I have strep, an ear infection, and an eye infection. Basically, I don't have the "luck of the Irish" at all.... I hope the leprechauns will eventually start to like me and I'll find my "pot of gold" here in Galway. OR...maybe my immune system will just get used to the rain and start working. Some of you have requested pictures of my apartment so I tried attaching them to this post. Also, ther [View Full Entry]

I have arrived...sort of Well, I've finally started doing this blog thing of my travels here in the Republic of Ireland. Sorry that it took so long, but I was busy getting my feet wet (literally) and just trying to figure things out in this place. Unfortunately, I not only got my feet wet, but I got myself completely soaked and sent to the hospital with mild hypothermia . So, I'm finally getting over my cold and I'm ready to do some more exploring! This time though I'll have on wellies so my feet won't actually get wet! Hallo again! Tonight is our second night in Galway, on the west coast of the island. We are in apartments that face the bay, and I think my group of 3 girls is in the best one! We're in the penthouse, so we have two little porches and a huge terrace, all looking out over different parts of the city and the bay. We have two bedrooms, which combined comfortably house 5 people. Kristen and I are in one room and Andrea's got her own room because she was feeling sick yesterday. :( Today she's better, though! We have a heat [View Full Entry]

I’m doing quite well on updating frequently. I have a personal journal, but it’s fun to write publicly, catering specifically to my adoring public. Ha, ha. The first day of class was today. First of all, I would like to point out that the highlight of my day was that a black Labrador puppy was running about in the Arts Concourse. He looked like he was about 9 months old, so he was taller but very gangly and awkward, with big paws and a flopping tail. So cute! I had seen him running around my apartment complex, and he looked like [View Full Entry]

Hello again! Paige, Megan, and Mother: Thank you for the comments! I loved them, and it’s exciting to sign back in and see love. I miss all of you guys very much. There is one particular thing I would like to address in this post: Grocery shopping. I always kind of thought I knew how to shop. Go in, get your stuff, leave? I focused primarily in the frozen food aisle, and perhaps the occasional box of cereal and a gallon of milk. Now, not only do I have to shop for myself, I have to shop for myself in Europe! Hello, All; I just saw an add for Subway on BBC. Isn't that funny? There's also an Aldi's in the shopping center, and American brands like Neutrogena and Dove in the drugstore. I went grocery shopping yesterday for the first time, and that was sure an adventure. It's not like I've never gone grocery shopping at home, but it's definitely an adventure here. I thanked god I chose an English-speaking country when trying to figure out what to buy. The shopping center is about a mile away from where we are staying. We have to walk along a very busy highway [View Full Entry]
