Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Molly Malone
I'll miss ya girl!
Myself and Ruth board a London bound plane tomorrow on the start of our World Tour. Fairwell to you Molly Malone and the drunks of Dublin, I'll miss you all. However, the word is that there are other countries (not as green as Ireland mind you) so I must persue new experiences. More news to follow. [View Full Entry]

This is the last message, as this time tomorrow my flight for Calgary will be getting ready to leave Heathrow. The weekend in Galway was heaps of fun--I am so glad I decided to go back there instead of going to Westport. I think Galway City is the most fun city I've ever been in. Dublin is fun--it's strange to be back in a big city again, but I suppose it is a good warm-up to being back in my real world in Calgary. I took the train here on Monday, which was such a fun and comfortable way to see [View Full Entry]

Here I am in chilly Dublin (I'd recommend a summer trip to my readers!), with Liz and the 'Tart with the Cart', Molly Malone. Just a long weekend away, but plenty of fun was had at the Guinness Factory and pubs with Liz, Dunc and their drunken friends...too much alcohol and not enough sleep all round! Maybe best not to stay in a 10 bed dorm next time... [View Full Entry]

Dublin with Eamo

From Rome I headed back to London and then a flight to Dublin. Dublin was grand as my mate Eamonn would say!. Thanks heaps to Eamonn and his family for hosting me and more than looking after me. Thanks also to those people who received a couple of calls from us at 4:00am (you know who you are) after Eamonn and I had celebrated in one of Dublins fine establishments. I spent three days in Dublin and thoroughly loved the place and will definitely be back....can u keep that couch spare for me on St Paddy's weekend mate? From Dublin I [View Full Entry]

Cathedral

Downpatrick
Before leaving Northern Ireland, we did not stop in BELFAST, only getting a tour from the bus; seeing a Queen Victoria statue and the Europa Hotel, the most bombed hotel in Belfast and only a couple of streets. I would have loved to walked around but we only got off the bus for a pit stop. Pity. Next was south to DOWNPATRICK where we saw the grave of St. PATRICK (buried in 461) on Cathedral Hill, DOWN CATHEDRAL and a former jail where we went inside and saw the cells. NEWBRIDGE HOUSE was our last stop getting a guided tour. It [View Full Entry]

Because of the Foot and Mouth disease epidemic, it was long unclear whether the planned trip to Dublin for Paddy's Day would continue or not. When it became clear that all Paddy's Day Parades were cancelled in the whole country, due to the fear of the disease spreading, quickly rumours started that the bus-trip to Dublin was also cancelled. This in the end turned out not to be true, so Saturday-morning at 7:45, a bus departed from the Promenade in Portstewart, and after picking up some more international students in Portrush and on campus, it went to Dublin, arriving there at [View Full Entry]

Dublin, Ireland

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
DAY 12 - TUESDAY 31 AUGUST Arrived at Heathrow Airport at approximately 6am. I was very tired at this stage but had to transfer to Gatwick, another London airport (there are 4 in total). Caught the shuttle bus to Gatwick and tried to get some sleep in the departure lounge (with a Sherrin as my pillow) but again it was impossible. The flight to Dublin departed at 11am, arriving in about 12.30pm. I was exhausted but that was the least of my problems. British Airways (God bless them) had managed to lose my suitcase and I was not impressed. I reported [View Full Entry]
