Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Dublin Day 2

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
kelly has gone into a serious depression because of the food here... we got a loaf of bread, jam, juice and coffee for breakfast for free at the hostel and kelly looked like she was going to go on a (small) homicidal rampage. We met SO many people last night it was ridiculous (all of them were male, attractive, and INCREDIBLEY inebriated... i think i have found a new home!) We are 2 of like, 4 americans in our hostel, most of the people who holiday in dublin seem to be brits. We are having an absolute blast, and in the [View Full Entry]

Dublin Day 1

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
We have just arrived in Dublin Ireland. We checked into our hostel around 10, and since we cannot go to our room until 3 we promtply headed to the nearest pub. After getting 2 Hienikens, we travelled to the sandwich shop around the corner, got some grub and returned to the pub to have another beer with our new best friend bartender, Michael. People here are so incredibley friendly. Everywhere you turn there are people smiling, strangers will wave to you, getting directions is the simplest thing in the entire world... i'm beginning to wonder if dublin is different or if [View Full Entry]

This is us in the hostel before we played a game of pool.
Ok, So i'm finally going to get this going so that you can see what I have been up to over here in Europe. As you obviously know, Kevin and I flew to London for a night and then headed to Dublin for a couple nights. We stayed in the Litton Lane Hostel which used to be where U2 and Sinead O'connor used to record their albums. It was right off the River Liffey which runs down the center of Dublin. We explored a bit, ate McDonalds a lot and eventually figured out where we should go to see the best [View Full Entry]

my feet hurt and i'm exhausted so i'm taking the night off. went out last night, twice, though, once with people who, of all the people and all the places to know and be from, are from lake elsinore and know hobbit and that whole group. we didn't determine this til halfway through our pub grubbing... we had just met and clicked and were eating together and when i said i knew where lake elsinore was, they asked if i knew anyone there and low and behold... hah! then i went out to dublin's only regular club (there's another that's generally [View Full Entry]

And, we're off!

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
Okay, it's official. We made it to Ireland and we found out that Patrick Pierce is here! We hooked up with him for a couple of days. Patrick is the one in the pic - with us at a pub. We originally planned to visit Northern Ireland first but we had to take advantage of some native hospitality. We are headed to Northern Ireland on Tuesday the 6th. My first challenge (Doug) was to acclimate myself to driving on the left side of the road and the driver seat on the right side of the car. I think I only [View Full Entry]

Carl and I maxed out our three days in Dublin. We arrived at 8am and spent the first day wandering the streets. Dropped our stuff off at a dodgy hostel. We headed straight for the temple bar district and had a look around, saw the 'Book of Kells' at Trinity College, and took the Guinness Tour (while the tour was so so, the view from the 7th floor and the Guinness was worth the full price). We had lunch there too. We ended up back in the temple bar district and did a mini pub crawl to hit the most places [View Full Entry]

Bag is packed. Although packed is overstating it a bit. I'm bringing the bare minimum. If Thailand is as cheap as everyone says, then it'll be a brand new t-shirt everyday. Most of it is malaria tablets. Dozens of 'em. Nosophobic!!!! So the itinerary goes like this. Thailand - 3 weeks Hong Kong - 1 week New Zealand - 2 weeks Fiji - 1 week The Cook Islands - 1 week Los Angeles - As long as I want (or until the immigration officers find me) So I'm flying out tomorrow. Two stopovers, London and Singapore, arriving on the island of [View Full Entry]

Day 2

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
Dad’s bday! We had a buffet breakfast this morning-mostly English breakfast stuff like eggs and bacon and sausages, there was like irish pudding which wasn’t all that nice but at least it was different. I stuffed myself! Since irish food is rather expensive we decided to have a big breakfast and manage not to have lunch! We drove to the National Botanical Gardens to have a walk around, there were lotsa species of plants there with magnificent greenhouses. We stopped by at the pub opposite a bought pint of Irish lager which was quite sweet, better tasting than yesterday’s [View Full Entry]

Dublin 2005

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
We woke up really early today-about 3 am-nearly didn’t wake up if it weren’t for Kung and Po waking us up. We drove to Stansted airport-it was magnificent! Typical Norman Foster architecture style. It was crowded! We actually had to queue up to get into departures. The flight was a good chance to catch up on some sleep! We got to Dublin on a cool morning. We were wondering how to get around the city…as transport was really expensive (the bus cost 5 euros a day per person!) in the end we resorted to renting a car-a Volkswagen golf which was [View Full Entry]
