Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Dublin

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
After four months in London it was lovely to see a friendly face from home when our friend Lin arrived from Adelaide to begin her tour of Europe. The three of us had planned a long weekend in Dublin and we were up early and on our way to Heathrow early on Friday morning to experience a little bit of the Emerald Isle. Flying Aer Lingus we were looking forward to being served by stewards with lilting Irish accents but as it turned out most, if not all of the air stewards were of eastern european background and our ears would [View Full Entry]

Medieval Dublin
The famous Temple Bar in Temple Bar

Ever wonder? Ha, it's all pure craziness! Life is beyond crazy...just when you expect something to happen that you've been waiting for to happen and reallu think it's God's will, it switches! Okay, I must have seriously confused you there so I'll explain... Today was great because I started work at the hostel, www.paddyspalace.com. Lots of fun to be had for sure but of course a lot of work as well. After having one of those horrible nights of 'no-sleep' (because of a SNORING man beneath my bunk)...I realised just how faithful God really is. I mean, here I am in [View Full Entry]

AGGHHHH! Life.

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
Well, I'm here. Yeah, so Ireland still rocks...but it's getting a little tough to live! Yuperidoo-dah, Shannon is having a tough time in this thing called LIFE... Recently, I have been looking around for a job. Although I had been doing this without truly seeking and asking the Lord where I should be in Ireland. Hmmm, bling bling!! Problemo?! After really realising that I should not be in Dublin for the reasons of having a good job or making good money, I should be here for serving the Lord! To learn what He would have me learn about moving, friendships, giving, [View Full Entry]

Day 3

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
Today we drove to Malahide Castle NE of Dublin, north of Howth. It was a really special place! Lotsa green grounds around, and the castle itself had a coffee room with nice displays of castle-y things. We had a bowl of chips-irish chips are realllyy nice, probably because they eat so many potatoes. We drove to Phoenix Park as well-the largest park in the world! there was a zoo but we didn't get to see any animals on our drive through! it was very pretty though. Later we went to Trinity College in town, parking outside the National History Museum. The [View Full Entry]

Day 4

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
Today we stopped in town and went to Dublin Castle, and went into a small church with nice architecture and traditional Anglican style. the national art museum in Ireland, and the national history museum.. the national history one was no way as good as the one in London, there were really limited fossil and rock displays, mostly they were reconstructions of birds and animals living in certain history periods, and most of the displays were covered up with leather covers and so we had to lift them up to see what was inside. It would have been so much better and [View Full Entry]

Back in Dublin

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
We're back in Dublin and thought we'd make one final entry from Ireland. This one doesn't have any pictures, but on the request of some people, here are our thoughts about our time here: The scenery was incredible. Based on the couple of pictures we sent, you can see that the terrain was rather rugged in Northern Ireland, particularly in County Antrim. When we got to the Cliffs of Moher it was raining, so those photos won't show the cliffs in all their beauty, but it was still a sight to see. We have both enjoyed driving through the smaller towns [View Full Entry]

So I came home...after all the excitement, after trying so hard to miss every boat and plane possible....and god knows there was alot to miss on my 3 day journey home! The pilot announced our descent into dublin, the view of patchwork fields almost has me doubting why I want to leave this place so much...and suddenly just as i recognised a land mark, visability is gone and the plane as with dublin is incased with grey skys and biting rain.....ugh! Well it keeps up my record of never landing in Dublin in sunshine! always being told that "it was sunny [View Full Entry]
