Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Conor and I in front of Trinity College
Dublin is an interesting city and it was great to be able to spend Sunday catching up with my university friend Conor who now lives there. We walked around the city splitting up jaunts with pints of Guiness at various pubs. Known as the European Tiger, Ireland’s economy and economic policy are models many other countries are striving to replicate. Much like anywhere, the real estate and construction boom is in full swing. I was shocked to learn that simple pre-sold(!) apartments are fetching upwards of €400-600,000! 35 year mortgages and 0% down are not uncommon. Last week, th [View Full Entry]

Where we saw the Book of Kells.
In Ireland "the Craic" is an expression meaning something like "the good times". We got off the bus on O'Connell street, the centeral street in Dublin. We cross the river Liffey and found our hostel in the Temple Bar district. The Oliver St. John Gogerty is a downstairs bar with modern music, a second floor with live Irish bands, and a top floor restaurant with a hostel in the adjoining part of the building. It was pure luck we stayed there - with Australia playing Ireland that weekend everything else was booked solid when we reserved at the last minute. We [View Full Entry]

At the Storehouse
Arkansas to Ireland
Early morning Dublin

I first heard about Couchsurfing.com from this American guy I met in Spain. It sounded so crazy, that I had to check it out. ---- Thursday night. Dave whom I've met through Couchsurfing, meets me at the airport. I think it amazing how an absolute stranger can be so generous and hospitable. You spend five minutes with him and you think you've known him for years. We go out to town. I try my first Irish Guinness. I like the feeling of doing something for the very first time. We go to a club. Dublin people are nice - friendly, conservative [View Full Entry]

Leaving the Dubs in one day. I am so psyched about leaving because I miss the sunshine soooo much and can't wait to get color back into this skin. When my friends ask for pic's of me I send them black and whites so they can't really tell how white I am. haha, just kidding. ahem A little while ago I took a three day tour of the North of Ireland. It was incredible! These events were only ones that took place on the pages of history books and movies for me...until I went. It was incredible, did I say that [View Full Entry]

Hey, hey, HEY!!! Life is precious and sweet... Yesterday was one of the coolest days I've had! ;-) It was spent just chillin' with some really cool friends at the Dublin Zoo. What a place to get to! My goodness, we spent at least two hours trying to get TO the zoo...but it was also the funnest part, lol. This cool Aussie guy named Grant came and then there was Luke (the Kiwi I work with) Peter and Aussie pal as well and this English dude named Jack who for some reason I would like to call Jacque. heh.
