Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Smart Cars and Guinnesses Someone callously swiped the left side mirror of my temperamental Vauxhall Corsa. My money is on Gary from across the street. Gary is irritated if you park your car outside his house. Heaven forbid he has to lumbar his beer belly three meters across the road to his car. We all pay our road taxes so everyone on the street, if possible, parks their cars in front of his house. Don’t get me wrong, the majority of the people on my street are lovely and don’t even mind me blocking their drive if I have to. Gary [View Full Entry]

St. Patrick's Day Weekend 16th-19th March, 2006 Let me tell you a little about "Ryanair" and our flight or not flight to Dublin! Bern and I booked flights to Dublin leaving at 8.30pm on Thurday night (the evening before St. Patrick's Day). When we checked in at Luton Airport our flight was already delayed by 3 hours and was not scheduled to depart until 11.30pm. For the next 5 hours we managed to entertain ourselves with some card playing. I was beginning to wonder if this was a frequent occurrance as many other groups of people at the airport also playing [View Full Entry]

Dublin airport, our car
Hi, I
The buds

This morning I woke at a nifty time off 9am. Skipped the shower (they where in a terrible state) and headed out into Dublin. I confirmed my bus at the station and headed out into the city off Dublin. I guess I'm just not used to huge citys but I don't like them. You have to scale 4 blocks just to see 1 thing. I mainly saw a ton off shops, only a few monuments before heading back to the bus. The city seemed cold and everyone kept to there own... much different to the small towns I visited in the [View Full Entry]

Hey there! So yes indeed, Dublin has done it again! My friend Erin and I did a "touristy" weekend (about time right?) and had a great time venturing around the city. Dublin really does have a lot to offer boy. So, on Saturday morning we caught the bus into Dublin and then immediately hopped onto the tour bus. Dublin is really cool because it has a few different tour buses that are "hop on hop off" which is a really great idea, beause whenever you feel like getting off at an attraction...you can! And the buses come by that same stop [View Full Entry]

So hey! I know this isn't big traveling or anything, but I just had to write about my awesome night last night! I went into Dublin with a group of buddies and we hit the city high-class style! We started the night at a famous micro-brewery called The Porterhouse where I was able to sample their three best stouts. One was a chocolate brew and it was absolutely delicious! It seriously tasted like straight chocolate! But moving on from the brewery we went to Murphy's Laughter House where we were 'giggled' by a Scotsman and two Irish...and boy were they characters. Dave's Christmas present from his family was a long weekend in Dublin. What better person could he think to take along with him, but the lovely Nicola. Our favourite things in Dublin were the Guiness factory, Johnny Foxes (thanks to Shelly and Jimmy for taking us up there), the Gaol and its moving political history, and our trip down the coast to Dun Learghy. Dublin was lots of fun and Dave is lucky enough to be heading back for a work trip (one night) next week. [View Full Entry]

Hi! I had a wonderful trip to Dublin last weekend with Liz, Amanda S. and Amanda B. We left on Thursday and spent three nights there. We stayed at a lodge (basically a bed and breakfast) because all of the hostels were booked. It ended up working out really well and was really nice. We will probably never stay in that nice of a place again so we enjoyed it. On the flight to Dublin we realized why everything was booked for the weekend. There was a 6 Nation Rugby Cup and Ireland was playing Italy on the Saturday we were [View Full Entry]

"How was Dublin?" you ask. Well, it was great, just watch out for the bikes. I arrived in Dublin on Monday night, and went pubbing with a girl I met on the bus from Glasgow. Had a few pints, checked out the local music, all that sort of thing. Had a late night, a slow morning, and did the art gallery/poking around town bit in the afternoon. Joel arrived in the evening, my friend went to a music rehearsal, and Joel and I had a quiet evening to be well rested for Wednesday, which we hoped would be a long day [View Full Entry]

During our last installment, we left you in Glasgow without any idea for our next stop. Just so you know, we went to Northern Ireland after that, and here's how it went: First, I know you're wondering about the pleasant company of dead people at the Necropolis in Glasgow. Well, they were great, but they didn't say much. Either which way, we decided to make our move to Northern Ireland. We hopped on a bus from Glasgow to Stranraer, caught a ferry from there to Belfast, then settled down in a hostel near the city center. The ferry from Stranraer to [View Full Entry]
