Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Trinity College 1
Trinity College 1
Here is the infamous Trinity College of Ireland. The most pretigious college and historically it did not allow Catholics to study there. Now that is different and most of the population is Catholic.
Here are my pictures from Ireland. It was such an amazing place and I would totally love to go back at any other time. It was so great with the people and their accents, the architecture, and the history of the country. Everyone should go to Ireland at some point in their life. It is totally worth it. I will finish up the pictures soon. [View Full Entry]

Ducks on a Wall
Ducks on a Wall
Three males and a female duck on a little brick wall. There is a fourth male over to the side.
Well, pretty much during my whole stay in Dublin the weather was unpredictable hour-to-hour. Most mornings started out sunny... only to turn windy, chilly, and rainy, then switch back to sunny for a bit before repeating the process. On this day, bouts of hail were also thrown in. While it let up for awhile, we walked around a park and a little town-area (still in Dublin) nearby. In the park there were a few duck families. And also along the way were what looked like four male ducks courting a female duck... three of the males standing side-by-side on a little [View Full Entry]

At the Guinness Storehouse
In the morning, I got my bags packed and ready to go. Thea and I then set out to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College. However, it was pretty packed, and with the time constraints, I decided I would rather visit the Guinness Storehouse... so we took a taxi there. By the way, I think all of the cabs we took had Irish drivers... even though there are a lot of immigrants in Dublin... it was kind of refreshing and the Irish drivers liked to talk a lot... giving me more insight into Ireland. Thea and I then toured [View Full Entry]

Woke up late and then walked to where Thea works (just off of St. Stephen's Green... "green" means "park". Thea gave me a tour of the building... I forget how old she said it is, but hundreds of years. It was built using Georgian achitectural styles... like many of the buildings in Dublin. "Georgian" refers to the years of King George. It consists of a narrow brick building with four of five floors. The front door is one of the showpieces of the building, and usually painted with a gloss paint. The doors were often bright colors of green, blue, or [View Full Entry]

Got a late start. There is a little town-area, near where Thea and Damien live, with little stores and restaurants... so I walked around there for awhile and also got lunch. From there I walked to Thea's work and said "Hi!". Then I went to the National Gallery of Ireland (http://www.nationalgallery.ie/), which displays a range of Irish and European artwork. Great artwork, but I'm also kind of burnt-out on the typical European artwork. From there, I walked to Trinity College... beautiful campus. Lots of students and tourists were out and about. A large pub at the corner of campus was o [View Full Entry]

So ive been thoroughly enjoying my time here in Dublin city. Over the last couple of days though Louise and I have ventured outward into the rolling hills of Ireland. On saturday we drove half an hour to a massive manor called Powerscourt. We had a little lunch there and wandered the tourists shops and marveled at the size of the estate. It would have belonged to a "lord" of the land back in the 1800s. Man alivin were these people rich. After we headed further down to Doneylough (pronounced doneloch) where they have two beautiful lakes situated amongst the [View Full Entry]

So yesterday was quite a day!!! I woke up around 9 or so and headed off into town by myself. It was really easy actually. I had tourists asking ME how the train worked! I absolutely LOVE DUBLIN CITY! Its quite crazy because everything there is sooo ooold. Its not like walking around Vancouver where its all skyscrapers. Everything here has a history. I hung out on Grafton street for a few hours by myself just wandering the shops. Its a pedestrian only street so thats rather handy. People all through the streets were selling flowers and playing the violin [View Full Entry]

So its day... well is it day 2 or 3 here in Ireland? I really cant keep track of the days im so totally backwards here. Anyways, last night was really cool! Louise and I went for a drive around Dublins coast. We had a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean and it was sunset, so it made a great picture opportunity. The roads are so narrow along there tho, theres only room for one car at a time, so that makes for an interesting driving. Louise had a good laugh at me because we would pass these beautiful stone [View Full Entry]

To Ireland So since im just waiting for Louise to get home from work, I thought id do a quick little update on the goings on so far... My flight left Vancouver at about 530 pm on April 4th. Thankfully it was a direct flight AND i got window seat haha. Although there wasnt much in the way of entertainment on the flight, I got to see the rockies for the first hour or so and then once I was up over the North West Territories the northern lights were RIGHT outside my window. Now I had never seen the [View Full Entry]

Snow in Dublin

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
Maddie and I left Seville on Wednesday evening and flew to Liverpool. The first thing we noticed when we stepped off the plane was the distinct difference in temperature between Spain and England! We never left the Liverpool Airport, as we caught our flight to Dublin shortly after arrival, but still it was fun to be in the presence of the Beatles! The Airport itself is actually called the John Lennon Airport. The flight from Liverpool to Dublin was very very short, up and down, and we landed and got through customs with no trouble. Then we made a big mistake...we [View Full Entry]
