Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Fleeting visit on a cheap flight courtesy of Aer Lingus to visit Squeezy in Dublin. This time I was accompanied by the lovely Dana Potato. The three of us succeeded in eating, sleeping and sitting our way through a chilly Ireland weekend. We did go out on the Saturday night and met up with one of Dana's friends and one of Cathy's friends. I'm sorry to say I didn't drink Guiness but I have discovered Bulmer's cider(Magner's in London). It had a nice if quite subdued night - we must be getting old. We were still quite late which made getting [View Full Entry]

Yah the whole trip looked like this pretty much
This trip was not so much about studying but we pretended...met some interesting people, learned about the history and present day Ireland. Lots of art and literature and well drank lots and lots of Guinness. The classes took place in Tralee and we traveled to Dingle and then to Dublin at the end of the trip. I have to say that the best part was being at Foxy Jons in Dingle a half hardware store half bar so funny. [View Full Entry]

11 May 06 Today I acctually got to sleep in a bit! I got up to go to the interview at Grafton Recruitment. The lady that interviewing me was named Lisa-Marie. She was very nice. AND she got me a job!!! I'm just doing temp work in offices. That is fine with me; I would rather that then working in retail. What is even better is I start the next day! The only thing is I'm only in one place for a few days and then I have to go around and do something different. But its good in a way [View Full Entry]

After a exhausting trip into the bowels of Cairo, it was time to catch up with some old old mates in Dublin. Now Dublin was known as a very intellectual town until someone invented whiskey and you know the rest from there. So Timmy and I werent expecting any rest to be had here. The exit from the sweet city of Cairo wasnt without incident, we were both awake at the crack of 5am to get out "transfer" to the airport courtesy of the most boring hostel on the planet, after waiting for the 6am proposed pick up and then watching [View Full Entry]

i should have started a blog before i left, like most PR conscious travellers, but the decision to go to ireland to save up more money for south america was rather last minute... and setting up a blog never quite happened. here's what tim and i have been doing since leaving perth. Perth to Malaysia: 12 hours in KL airport, trying to sleep on benches in the departure lounge; then on to Manchester. From Manchester we flew to Dublin and then jumped on a train to Dunlaoghaire, half an hour south of the city. 34 hours after we left Perth we [View Full Entry]

I'm in Dublin now and I'm having awesome weather, so it's great craic! I got here on Tuesday from Galway. Over the weekend I went to Inis Mor (one of the Aran Islands), which is an island off the coast of Galway. It was pretty amazing. All the people there speak Gaelic. I really love the fact that there are still places where people speak Gaelic. When we first arrived in Cork, the Garda (police) man told us that Gaelic was as useful as Latin, which made me really sad. But it isn't! I cycled around Inis Mor. It's really interesting [View Full Entry]

Dublin is fun

Think you're a dedicated drinker? Are you dedicated enough to wake up every morning and drink Irish coffee? -- three at a time -- in a row. How about, are you willing to commit yourself to step dancing wasted for seven hours on a hard-wood floor, waking up with shin splints and doing it all over again? ... Yeah? Well what are you waiting for -- get your ass to Dublin! That was my little advertisement. A high alcohol tolerance helped me survive Dublin -- that and some common sense. Stay at Barnacles Temple Bar hostel. It's on Temple Lane, a [View Full Entry]

08 May 06 Today was a very exciting day! It started off with me getting registered as an immigrant. Talk about a bad picture on my id card that I got it! lol Sarah, Jay and I left at ~8:30am to go over. We only waited about an hour and a half and we were told if we went later on in the day then it would be a 3-4 hour wait! After that we went to the USIT office (they are the ones who deal with SWAP) and printed off some resumes or CV's. Then off to the Internet cafe [View Full Entry]
