Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Day 76: Ireland, Dublin
Dublin - Cathedral
Day 76: Friday 21st. July 2006: Misty: We dropped the car off at the ferry and had smooth sailing to Belfast where it was a quick taxi ride to the train to Dublin. Said to the cabbie we would be back in a week and see him then!!!! Arrived in Dublin and walked to the hostel, lugged our cases up all the stairs, packed what we needed for the week into 1 case, then stored the other at the hostel. Took a walk around before settling for the night as we have a big week ahead with a Shamrockers "All [View Full Entry]

Day 76 Ireland, Dublin
Day 76: Ireland- Dublin
Day 76: Ireland- Dublin

One thing that I have learned here is you can never take any thing for granted. If you want to do something do it. Don't wait around and say you will do it later there will always be time. I say this because you never know what life is going to hand you. The next major thing occurred here on 23 June 06. This was probably the most heartbreaking thing that has happened to me. A good friend of mine, Jim (James) Brooks died. He had had some drinks the night before and was put to bed by some of his [View Full Entry]

01 July 06 I had been so excited for this day to come. Everyone at work knew when Canada Day was. It was even at the point where when I walked into work that morning one of the girls (Irish) wished me a Happy Canada Day. I made sure that I took the night off work and the next day as well. Jay and I met up when I finished work. We went to my place where we started to put on Canada day tattoos that Mom had sent me. Jirka and Monika (friend from Czech who is here for a [View Full Entry]

02 July 06 Today Jay, Sarah and Sarah's mom (who is here visiting) went to go see the powerhouse falls. In an email that my cousin sent me said we should check it out. He said it was in Wicklow, but I didn't think about Wicklow County. So being the brilliant person that I am we went to the town Wicklow, and found no waterfalls. It was a nice town and all but it was just different from what we were expecting. The falls were actually like an hour away in another part of Wicklow Co. There was ruins of a [View Full Entry]

Well here we are in Dublin and have had a good start to this leg of the journy. I just finished reading the previous blog and now I will continue on with what we were up to. So we had a great time with Claire and Max and were sad to go. There were much huggs and many promises to return and visit at a later point. Max was the one to drive us to the airport because he has a GPS system that tells him where to go and it worked wonderfuly. We got to the airport with plenty of [View Full Entry]

Ireland & UK

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
Hello Everyone Since I last wrote I have done quite a lot. I caught up with Mum & Dad in London after the Europe trip, that was really great. We did a few touristy things around town, like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben etc. I only had 2 days with them & then they left to go back home to Australia. I also caught up with a few friends from the tour before they all headed off. We went to Jamie Oliver's restaurant 'Fifteen' for lunch. The food was really really good, I have never tasted such nice antipasta in my life. [View Full Entry]

Dublin...um wow

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin
First thing I learned about Dublin was that I am very, very poor. Which sucks, but we all deal. The Beatles are playing at the Internet Cafe here, the first time in a week that I've been able to get onto a computer. AGHHHHH. Today I went to the Jameson Whiskey factory. It was very good. My mom was the official tastetester for the group, and she gave me most of her samples. I was lucky enough to meet up with my parents, because they just happened to be in this part of Ireland for ther week. Very Strange, but definately [View Full Entry]

Somebody was partyin' last night
Somebody was partyin' last night
Shortly after breakfast we climbed into our bus and headed down toward the river. Just before the bridge over the River Liffey is a statue of Daniel O'Connell, another hero of Irish Independence. Th... [more]
The ghost of James Joyce let me sleep through the night. I don't think ANYTHING would've woken me last night. It was very quiet in the back of the hotel and I was exhausted. The hotel breakfast didn't live up to the great experience we had back in Killarney. It was mostly cereal and bread. No eggs, bacon or hash browns. Everyone raved about the coffee but it's not my cup of tea. Instead, I went back to my room and downed a soda and half a bag of chips. When we were walking around last night we kept seeing people [View Full Entry]

The doors of Dublin
St. Patrick
Interior of the cathedral

So after some delays and some interesting weather (thunderstorms while on the plane!!), we're here in Dublin... We spent the day wandering the city, enoying the architecture and the buskers. There was a band playing in St. Stephen's Green, which was really cool. It was great to just sit outside and enjoy the sunshine after hours and hours and hours of sitting in airports and on planes. Tomorrow we head off to London... The jet lag is just starting to hit so hopefully we'll be able to catch up on some sleep before seeing too many countries. :) Hope you're all [View Full Entry]

Our house

We reached the final destination of our original journey when we landed at Dublin airport early Sunday morning to be greeted by Danny (friend from NZ) and also by the worst weather we had encountered for quite a long time, there were strong winds, rain and it was bloody cold. We were slightly concerned that this was an Irish "summer". However, later in the day it cleared up a little and stopped raining long enough for Danny to play a game of cricket. We spent the day watching the cricket and saw the world cup final at the cricket club before [View Full Entry]
