HomeworkHomework
Homework

Lots of homework to be done before I depart. Both books and from the web.

April 18 Wednesday...It seems that the one constant thing in life is that there is always homework and preparations that needs to be done. I have bought several Lonely Planet and other travel guides and have been studying them. And gleaning what practical information I can get from travel blogs, tripadvisor reviews etc. Also over the past week or so I have packed my suitcase, repacked my stuff to a backpack, repacked it back to the suitcase, and finally decided that the suitcase is both too heavy to be carried by hand up stairs etc, and completely full leaving no room for inevitable additions. So I have finally settled on using my big backpack. I won’t be taking anything that I can’t toss if it gets to be a problem. Basically I will be using the principal that every THING is expendable…I have bought a round trip to Dublin through Travelocity.com on U S Airways flying out of Austin. It departs Austin on May 9 at11:48AM , connecting in Charlotte , NC, and then across the Atlantic overnight arriving in Dublin at 6:55 AM. On the seating chart I requested the aisle seat nearest the bathrooms. One thing I learned on my last trip is those stupid stewardesses block the aisle severing drinks, nuts, etc and a man can’t get to the bathroom which is always in the back of the plane. They say the one in front is for First class. So hopefully I get my seat request. Also of course I bring my own snacks to eat instead of buying anything from them. I bring an empty 20oz Ozarka water bottle and refill it from a water fountain at the airport after passing through security….My round trip ticket was $841 with taxes and fees but of course there is an additional $25 baggage fee each way. I don’t know how some people say they can travel for months using a small carry on bag…..they must be some kind of filthy animals time they get through.... .I have set up my return trip for June 20 so that is about my usual 6 week trip period. After about 6 weeks it doesn’t matter if I am in Paradise or not….I want to get back to my family a bit. I keep reading about people needing to escape but I can’t honestly say that is the case for me. I enjoy my time at home just as much as my time traveling. It is just that I am keenly aware that this is the best shape I will ever be in so I need to travel while I can. Every time I turn around someone I know personally is being diagnosed with cancer or something….or just sitting down and dying! Geee…..Now that I have bought my ticket I will turn my attention to reading reviews on hotels and hostels on tripadvisor.com. Also I will read their forum entries which usually have some practical information posted…….

I am a sojourner, that is my occupation, that is what I do. I took Early Retirement in December 2010 and never looked back. I have taken several trips while on vacations around the US and to Europe while I was working but now can travel full time if I wish. Since I retired I have been visiting or revisiting many of my favorite locations in the US and then revisiting many of my favorite locations in Europe at a more leisurely pace, blogging all the way. When I post a blog I try and provide some practical and useful information on the location I visit in the blog for the frugal/budget travele... full info

Very exciting
Your trip is just around the corner. When we travel for long periods of time we have laundry days where we get caught up on our writing. Sounds like you've got a great plan. Can't wait to hear all about it. Looks like you have done your homework. Can't wait to read your blogs.
