Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Our hostel, Mainistir Hostel, on Inis Mor, Aran Islands, Ireland
It was a long but uneventful drive from Kilarney to Rossenvael (sp) for the ferry to Inis Mor (big island in Gealic). We made it in plenty of time for the 12:00 ferry. One word of advice, donŽt park at the 1st car park if you can avoid it. There is another one alot closer to the ferry. It was fun sitting on the ferry watching all the folks whoŽd parked at the further car park and were close to the departure time run to get the ferry! It only took about 1/2 an hour to get to the island. The [View Full Entry]

Aran Islands, Inis Mor: May 5 to 7, 2006 The international society left at 9 am on Friday morning (May 5th) for Galway to board a ferry for the Aran Islands, specifically Inis Mor. We stayed at a hostel inland. The island is approximately 10 miles across by 3 miles wide and is the largest of the three Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. We had no plans, so upon arriving on Friday afternoon, Caitlin and I wasted no time journing to Dun Aonghasa, a fort overlooking the cliffs of the island. We traveled to Seven Churches, a ringfort [View Full Entry]

St Patricks day is today, incase anyone forgot, and im sure nobody did because this whole campus is covered by hung over/drunk students wearing green. We watch boondock saints, play irish drinking games, and see shamrocks everywhere. When I signed online today google popped up and I noticed that instead of the usual blue red and yellow google font, it was "google" was written in shamrocks. Because of the commercialization of holidays we lose the true meaning of them. Technology such as the internet has made the day of rememberance for St. Patrick a green drinking day. The same thing happen [View Full Entry]

hello guys... the last few days I spent in galway were pretty fun. I met a couple of teachers from colorado who talked me into driving with them up the coast, actually it didn't take much talking, they are going into dublin on the same day i am so why not have a free ride. so i guess that its not really a change of plans if you didn't have any plans in the first place. In the meantime I saw the cliffs of moher again and snapped a few pictures. Last night ended up in westport which is the capital [View Full Entry]

In the early evening, we arrived in the resort of Bundoran passing some more pretty dark green mountain scenery of Benbulben. The rain had stopped as we arrived at the Great Northern Hotel which also had a golf course. Our rooms were so cute, well for a female anyways. Leanne's and I shared a room and we had pink walls and a view of part of the golf course while Suzi's room had pink lamps, dark green walls, a red phone and a view of the Atlantic. We had some time to explore around the hotel before dinner, so the 3 [View Full Entry]
