Ennis Friary
Our first Irish Heritage site. Many Catholic churches were damaged when the Cromwell invaded Ireland.
Aughnanure Castle
Cyndi, Jeff and Jackie tour Grace O'Malley's (the pirate Queen's) castle. She was the wife of an O'Flaherty.
Connemara National Park
We spend an afternoon climbing the hills and walking the trails. The Lakes and hills are beautiful.
Athenry
After singing "The Fields of Athenry" so often, we finally see the castle keep and the walled city. Unfortunately, it is not a "soft rain" day!
Kilmacduagh monastery
the rain continued as we walked the grounds of this 7th century abbey. Round towers are a common sight among the many ruins.
The Kilimer-Talbert Ferry
We leave the Nolans and take the ferry across the Shannon for the next part of our journey.
Carrigafoyle Castle
Across the Shannon, we navigate a narrow road to find the stronghold of the O'Connor Clan. We climb a circular staircase to a landing. When Dean and the kids descend, I take this shot from above.
Carrigafoyle
Jeff and Jackie scale the outer wall of the castle. Behind them, the damage done to the castle by English cannons are evident.
