I've been busy since my last update. I have been in Doolin for the last couple of days, exploring the Burren. The first afternoon, another Canadian and I walked about 8km just exploring the area, before hitting two of the three pubs in town.
Yesterday morning, we hired bikes bright and early at 8am (after convincing the guy the day before to open an hour early for us) and rode about 8km out to Kilfenora, where there are supposed to be some spectacular high crosses. It turns out, two of the three have been taken out for restoration, but it was still a great bike ride, with perfect weather (a nice cool breeze, not too sunny). We got back around noon, and the other Canadian had to catch a bus to Dublin. I had the bike for the rest of the dya, but I retturned it early, because it was having some mechanical difficulties. The adjustable seat wouldn't adjust, except for the part that is supposed to stay in place--it kept moving. The six highest gears (it was an 18-speed) wouldn't work either. It made cycling over the country roads and hills very hard. Fortunately, only the first half of the the way there was uphill, and then it was more or less downhill to Kilfenora. Coming back it was the same thing--uphill for the first bit, and downhill for the rest.
After I dropped off the bike, I went for a shower, and when I got out, it was pouring with rain. There's only one thing to do in Ireland when it is raining, and that is head to the pub. So I went to the third pub in town for a plate of hot Irish stew and a Guinness. it turns out that the last pub I tried is my favourite one, so after a few hours reading and watching Olympic highlights in the hostel, I went back to the pub (O'Connor's) for more Guinness and some traditional music.
This morning I caught the 8am buss to the Cliffs of Moher. I knew it was going to be a good day when the bus driver turned out to be a leprechaun. Well, he could be a leprechaun, he was so short and charming. I arrived at the Cliffs before the hoards of other tourists, so I quite enjoyed my time there. I went to wait for the bus back into Doolin, and the gentlemen at the carpark kiosk let me wait inside, where it was warm, and we could talk. As soon as people here find out I am traveling by myself, they ask if I had met an Irish lad yet, or if I've left someone special in Canada. It's a bit funny.
This afternoon I took the ferry out to one of the Aran Islands, which was absolutely amazing. One the way back to my hostel though, I met a creepy old Irishman who offered to fly me out here for two weeks next spring, and stay in his house with just him. The Irish accent doesn't make it any less disturbing!
Tomorrow I head to Galway City for a couple of days.
