Our trip ends today. We continue traveling around the Ring Road back to Reykjavik with some interesting stops along the way. Technically we are in West Iceland traveling back to Southwest Iceland. First stop is Grabrok, a volcano with a nice crater that has a walk up it.

Before I get to today's activities, I would like to give information about the Ring Road. From Wikipedia: Route 1 or the Ring Road (Icelandic: Þjóðvegur 1 or Hringvegur) is a national road in Iceland that runs around the island and connects most of the inhabited parts of the country. The total length of the road is 1,332 kilometres (828 mi). Some of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland, such as the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Dyrhólaey/ur... read more

Now we are in North Iceland and our weather is acceptable - sporatic rain but not clear either. We left Egilsstair and traveled the Highlands to an isolated farm. The man who lives here was so far away from a church that he built his own church. He has turned his farm into accommodations, camping, cafe, gift shop, and a cute tourist stop. Sindri, our guide, said there was an arctic fox and he could call him from his burrow, because Sindri speaks fox saying he learned from a girlfriend who was foxy (Sindri is quite the jokester). Sure enough, Sindri called him and a young arctic fox comes out of the burrow where he sleeps. From here we went to Dettifoss. We're moving around the island in a counterclockwise direction, so we are at the south part of the island. The storms hit from the south and the wind picks up alot of moisture. As the air rises over the mountains it drop the precipitation as snow which is why the largest glaciers are on the south side of the island. Then volcanoes erupt and push through the glaciers which causes massive floods. We drove by massive lava fields; some had moss all over them and some looked like they happened yesterday. We also went by areas that massive glacier floods had brought tons of debris, boulders, and ice. The shoreline was actually pushed out by debris from glacier outflow. Today we continued driving around the Ring Road. We are traveling the East Fjords, and there are plenty of them. Sindri, our guide, had a surprise for us this morning. He took us to Stokksnes. From Wikipedia: Stokksnes is a headland on the southeastern Icelandic coast, near Hofn and Hornafjördur. Stokksnes is located south to the mountain Kastarárfjall, where the dent Vestarahorn was featured in the Bollywood film Dilwale.url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... read more

We had alot to do today - and all of it in cold, windy, driving rain. After all the participants of the tour with Arctic Adventures were picked up, we were on our way. Our guide is Sindri, and he is the driver and guide for this trip. He is a wealth of information and he talks the whole time he is driving through this horrible rain. My cousin said all the photos are not coming through. I don't know why, maybe the wi-fi connection? Sorry about that. I killed you with iceberg photos, now I'm going to kill you with waterfall photos. First stop: Thingvellir. When I packed clothing for this trip I figured I needed the warm clothing and rain gear for Greenland. Wow was I wrong. It rained once in Greenland, and drizzled another day. It was cold only near the glaciers and icebergs. The rest of the time the weather was great. Yesterday was a good day in Reykjavik, but I knew the rain was coming, but I didn't know it would be this bad. It's cold, very windy, and raining sideways. Today I transferred from my AirBnB to Hotel Orkin. Luckily I was able to walk there before the rain hit, about a 20 minute walk. I put my luggage in storage, rested awhile, then figured out how to take the public bus to Perlan. It was actually quite easy and the bus drivers were very helpful ... read more

August 23, 2019 – Reykjavik, Iceland – Weather: 52°F/11°C, partly cloudy with the scattered showers, wind 1mph, humidity 71° Port of call for the next two days is Reykjavik the capital of Iceland which is situated on the western shores of the island. First thought to have been settled in the 9thor 10thcenturies by Celtic and Norwegian immigrants it wasn’t until the 18thcentury when a full-fledged community had developed. Today we docked at 11:00 am out in the container port area under threatening skies. Cloudy skies, rain and cool temperatures have certainly been a large part of this journey. Our tour for today is called the Best of the Golden Circle, an eight-hour driving tour of the area that in the end covered over 300+ kilometers. On our tour we stopped at a geothermal power plant ... read more

August 24, 2019 – Reykjavik, Iceland – Weather: 55°F/13°C, partly cloudy with the sky clearing to blue sunny skies, wind 8.1 mph, humidity 71° We awoke this morning to a very quiet Reykjavik harbour. Even though we are docked in a container port area there was no activity at the docks. The city is having a festival today that includes a marathon this morning, street parties all through the day culminating in a firework display just as we are leaving port this evening at 11:00 pm. Our tour today was called “Lunar Landscapes”. Our first stop was in the village of Grindavik where the Viking World Museum is located. We spent an hour in the museum which is home to a full-scale replica of the Gokstad Viking longship that was discovered in Norway in 1882. On ... read more
