So, you're going to Iceland on Honeymoon?!?! Ok, so not the usual destination, but somewhere different. We'd searched the usual trips, 2 weeks on a beach etc etc, but it just didn't appeal, and having both travelled a bit, we wanted to see somewhere interesting that was also a bit off the beaten track. So I looked at companies that did trips to Iceland.
We ended up looking at Discover-the-World, I'd known people who had travelled with them before and recommended them, and having used them, I definately would as well. We opted for the fly-drive option (I did not want to spend my honeymoon sat on a tour bus with lots of other people!). Everything was organised for us - the flights, the length of the trip, the hotels (there was some choice in places like Reykjavik), the car and the transfers. The theory was we would get the car, have a suggested route and itinery provided for us, and hotels booked along the way for us for each night. If we decided to follow the itinery, we could, if we didn't then we didn't! It worked really well, and I really would recommend it as a good idea for people who don't want to be on an organised tour, but don't want to organise everything themselves. Booking was really easy - I decided I wanted a few extra nights in Reykjavik at the start, which was no problem (any alterations to the normal itinery weren't a problem it seemed), and we even looked at flying back into another airport. The suggested itinery was good - it took in all the sites that were worth seeing along the route, we did stop off at a couple of other places that we found in the loney planet guide, such as the lobster restaurant in Stokkseyri, about 20km from the hotel in Hveragerdi which provided an excellent dinner and a trip to the blue lagoon, which was suggested at some point in the itinery was a lovely end to the holiday on the way back to the airport.
I didn't realise I could book my tickets in my married name and travel on my passport and marriage certificate, so everything was booked in my maiden name. However one quick phone call to customer services the day before we left meant that all the hotel bookings were changed to my married name, which was a lovely touch and I was made to feel like it was no problem at all.
Highlights of the trip: - Ease of booking and good itinery
- Hotel near Skaftafell National Park - definately the best of the tour I'd say
- Being our own bosses.
Thanks to Discover the World for all their help in making it special.
