Short and sweet - real fun begins tomorrow. Chilly rainy day today, so I didn’t do much. The benefit of Reykjavík, bad weather doesn’t bother me since I’ve seen it, done it and I don’t mind if it’s quiet. I bussed down to the harbour and walked back through the little neighbourhoods, just to get a taste of something new. (I also had my pastries to keep me going, yum lol). Also found a few new statues which is always fun :) Flight to Oslo was uneventful - airport was a little more chaotic than usual, but nothing compared to Toronto. Got some more skyr, had my tuna sandwich (always forget they put egg in their tuna sandwiches here which is fine… just a weird surprise) and people watched for a bit. ... read more

It is so good to be back out in the world..! I'm going to get all feels about that at some point on this trip, but right now I'm too tired. Covid got me at the start of July and I was very nervous about how I'd feel and of course that I'd test negative before leaving (which I did, right down to the wire!) Pearson lived up to the current horror stories - it was indeed a gong show, particularly the security line and then just about every Air Canada flight seemed to be delayed - thankfully Icelandair did well, we only left about 15-20min delayed. I also did surprisingly well with the lights and pressure change - that was the last big thing to try post-concussion, success..!! Flight was uneventful. I paid for extra ... read more

We had planned a trip into Reykjavik today but we are both tired and the sun is shining. Although there’s still a bit of a cold wind we can wear our thin trousers for the first time this trip! We elect for a lie in followed by a full English breakfast. This is a nice campsite on the edge of a quiet seaside town so we decide we’ll stay a couple more nights. The camp warden is recommended a few places to visit…though when more details are required he doesn’t know as he’s never visited them! He is from Serbia and hoping to move his family out here for a better life. Trouble is, he has never been here in winter…so will they all adapt? He tells us life in Serbia is not good and he ... read more

On July 4th, Renee and I flew out of Baltimore for a 7 Day Arctic Adventure Tour. Iceland is a very unique place which I will tell you about over the next 8 days. You will find the narrative very interesting. We flew on Play Airline which was delayed in leaving for 3 hours. We missed our tour group on July 5th and needed to take taxi at the cost of $400 to catch up with our tour bus. Landing in Keflavik, we had bus tickets for the ride to Reykjavik, where we were scheduled to be pick up at the local bus station. It was strange to me that the International Airport was not in the capital, I thought I made a mistake and booked our flight to the wrong one. The bus ride is ... read more

Also erst mal ab zum Geysir.

It’s 6am and the sun is shining brightly. I decide to take my shower now whilst everyone else is still in bed. The bed has to be dismantled and bedding stowed before we can enjoy our breakfast. Today we have elected to head up to the hills to Pingveiller National Park - home to the first Viking parliament…formed in 980AD…and Oxararfoss, a gigantic waterfall. We start at the waterfall and then walk along a gulley formed by the movement of tectonic plates…’walking between two continent’ Ian has threatened to report more about this later? Retracing our steps we make our way towards a tiny tin church passing the site of the Viking parliament and taking in the lovely views. By the time we have done all this we are pretty tired but it’s hard to resist ... read more

The bed in our hotel room has been very comfortable so we have both slept well and we don’t wake till the alarm sounds. It’s looking a bit grey outside but then it looked that way yesterday morning too. We enjoy a great breakfast before bringing our bags down ready for our campervan adventure! At 10 on the dot, Iris arrives to take us to collect our van. We are given the low down on all the dos and don’ts to ensure we won’t come back to a stack of parking and speeding fines. We are also warned about the dire consequences of driving through rivers or letting the wind (which is fearsome here) rip the van doors off! We are handed a tablet which is the sat nav system and also a communication device between ... read more

Up at 2am, quick shower, check out and 15 minute walk to Luton Airport. Our flight has not been cancelled so that’s a bonus. We have been told to report to check in by 3am although check in clearly states it won’t open till 4am. In fact they do open around 3am and we proceed to self check in. In much the same way as every supermarket self check out I’ve ever attempted I’m forced to call for help as the machines don’t like our suitcase. Nothing to do with us we are assured, some of the belts always malfunction. Next we walk several miles though a maze of walkways to reach security…obviously we must need the exercise as the channels are all empty. Seems like they just like to punish you for bringing too much ... read more

I have wanted to visit Iceland for a long time. I finally made it onto the Isle of Fire and Ice that straddle two tectonic plates in June 2022. I spent a month exploring the island. My route more or less followed the N1, The Ring Road, in an anti-clockwise direction. I spent a couple of days exploring Reykjavik before setting off. I set off to explore the peninsula of Seltjarnarnes which stretches northwest from the city into the bay. The cycle was intended as a gentle warm up to tougher days which I had no doubt lay ahead. It turned into a lovely wildlife tour. It was soon obvious that birds are much more tolerant of people in Iceland than in Ireland. A solitary black tailed godwit in its gorgeous red summer plummage continued feeding ... read more
