Not a lot to write about tonight but I'm not sure I'll be able to post tomorrow so I thought I'd put a quick note up.
Today was our last day in Hrauneyjar and we were able to sleep in a bit which was glorious! I slept until 10 and then took a shower and made my way over to the main hotel. The manager here is so incredibly nice and even though breakfast ends at 9, they held it for all of us late risers.
We had 2 lectures before lunch about life in ice, rocks and where it may, or may not be, on Mars. After that we had lunch and everyone was ecstatic to see chicken and pasta! We have seen neither since we arrived and we've been talking about nothing but wanting chicken. We found out why we haven't been seeing it...apparently it's REALLY expensive here in Iceland since they have to import it. Not quite sure why they can't raise their own but whatever!
After lunch we had 2 talks on molecular and microbiology which were good and then after our coffee break had a talk on PCR and DGGE. I was excited because it was the one talk where I knew every single thing he was talking about since I do this for my research. There were a lot of confused people though so it dragged for a bit with some very basic questions that honestly would have been answered had they bothered to read the lab manual we were sent!
Anyways, after that we had time for a bit of fun so one of the instructors, Karen, gave a talk on what was scientifically wrong with the movies Armageddon and Deep Impact.
We had a 2 hr break before dinner so I washed my clothes in the sink since the washer here at the hotel is always being used (the manager is allowing us to use it for free so everyone is lining up to use it!) and hung them out to dry while packing the rest of my stuff and then headed to dinner.
We had lamb pastrami for an appetizer, which was okay. Salmon (i swear it was salmon because I don't like salmon unless it's in sushi and it sure tasted like it, but everyone was calling it trout...I think there is a language thing going on there), potatoes and pea pods (yay for green vegetables!!). For desert there was ice cream on top of strawberries and then a brittle like candy on top.
If you like lamb, undercooked meat, and weird fishes this place really has amazing foods. It's a top notch chef and the presentations are beautiful.
We decided to go for a dip in the jacuzzi and then threw my not so dry clothes in the dryer for a bit. I just headed down here to send this and claim my clothes before going back to finish packing and get some sleep.
We have a long day tomorrow as we're taking the very extended route to Reykjavik up to the north and following the coast, stopping at some cultural and historical places. We're not due to arrive at the hotel until 11 or so at night and we start the next morning on lab work at 8:30.
Anyways, night everyone from a still sunny at 11:20PM Hrauneyjar, Iceland!

Hi Kris! Enjoy the sun! It still is a rare commodity here! Found the pewter vase from Hartford High at Grammie's. Slowly, but surely, we're finding everything!
How nice that you had some time to rest a little. The food sounds interesting!
Take care! Love you!
Beth
The chicken must have to do with the weather. Chicken is actually a seasonal food for the warmer months!
