Helicopter flight above the Eyjafjallajökull volcano

When we were driving back to Reykjavik, Haukur had arranged the possibility for us -who wanted- to do a helicopter flight over the Eyjafjallajökkull volcano. We had to decide very quick if we wanted to participate or not. After a little bit hesitating, a quick call to my family, I decided to give it a try..

Since it was the first time that I was in a helicopter, I didn't know what to except. But I can tell you this: it's not reassuring if you have to complete a document before departure with a name and telephone-number of someone who they can reach "if there should occur a problem". Not necessary to say that I was nervous about it!

It took us about ten minutes to reach the vulcano.
In the meantime we saw lots of people hiking to reach the feet of the volcano. Our guide told us that the Icelandic Search and Rescue had to rescue a lot of people who underestimated the distance and the cold (!) to reach the volcano. I've heard that for an experienced hiker it normally takes 7 hours to reach the volcano. Apparently the volcano was not far away from a hiking route.
We could see that the surroundings of the Eyjafjallajökkull were totally black. When we were flying around the volcano, the helicopter pilot said that we should put our hand outside. We felt the heat of the volcano.

When we flew back, everyone was excited. This was a once in a lifetime experience. After all I'm very glad that I've done it. I could recommend it to everyone.
