Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during World War I. The country fell under Communist rule following World War II. In 1956, a revolt and announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact were met with a massive military intervention by Moscow. Under the leadership of Janos KADAR in 1968, Hungary began liberalizing its economy, introducing so-called "Goulash Communism." Hungary held its first multiparty elections in 1990 and initiated a free market economy. It joined NATO in 1999 and the EU in 2004. To be updated

gorgeous view on the way up to the citadell in Buda
Have had a brief one night stop in Budapest after 2 nights in Lake Balaton where there was only bad weather. I did however get to sample some delicious hungarian. A lentil dish with veal stew that was so yum and hearty. At balaton we went on a big adventure to get ingrediants to make pancakes but when we got back and id made the mixture, the hotplate decided to die. So I went searching and found a bbq type thing, where with the help of the Hungarian gardener who chopped me some kindling, I made a fire. The pancakes were [View Full Entry]

Ash managed to book us a fairly cheap hostel for our one night stay here so we werent expecting much. However it turned out really pleasant. Helpful staff, kitchen and a crazy cot/boxing ring style bed high up near the ceiling. After buying some supplies we set out for a quick tour of Budapest. After being here only a month or so back i was able to take Ash around the must see sights. We went to Heros square first which is awesome and Ash wandered into an awesome park that I hadnt seen when i was here last. From there [View Full Entry]

Budapest is a very unique place. Surrounded by slovic countries, Hungary exists as a sort of cultural island in eastern europe. You immediately notice this when you arrive somewhere and they immediately announce. "See ya." At first I was at a loss. I had not done my homework before coming and did not even know one word in Hungarian. Bad tourist! Bad! I quickly learned that everyone wasn't trying to hurry me out of their country... but instead "see ya" is a friendly Hungarian 'hello' (spelled 'seeo.') Love it. I find being here is like playing Opposite Day when you were [View Full Entry]

After the 3 hour bus ride into Budapest, we quickly made our way to Deli Pu. which was our train station. Having some time to kill and it being dinner time, we quickly ran across the road to order a take away pizza for the journey. It took longer than expected and we were almost going to run off without the pizza but it came just in the nick of time! When we arrived in Siofok it was after midnight and we soon realised the directions to the hostel were pretty average. To make things worse we got a major bum [View Full Entry]

Sopron Shuffle

 Europe » Hungary » Sopron
I originally planned to stay in Budapest for three days, but on the way there, I read an article in my inflight magazine about a quaint little city on the Hungarian/Austrian border called Sopron (pronounced “Sho-pron”) that was worth a visit. Since I had an extra day on my train pass, I decided to go to Sopron for one day and cut short my visit to Budapest. After getting yelled at by a Hungarian train official, I found the right train heading to Sopron. However, I was a little confused when I saw a different destination on the train, but decided [View Full Entry]

The only way to get to Budapest from Krakow was to take the overnight train (11 hours in total). It only looked 6 hours on map but alas, it was not so. Knowing how grizzly I was after our last Polish train trip it was decided that we would get the overnight train with a sleeping compartment. Ha! First mistake - calling it a sleeping compartment. The only lucky thing was we didnt have to share it with two strange undesirables (I just had to share it with 1 very excitable 31 year old who was acting like a 13year old!) [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone. We are now in Pécs, Southern Hungary. It is much smaller than Budapest, and much hotter. It is also prone to monstorous thunderstorms. We're staying a little bit out of town atop a dirty big hill (the walk is probable comparable to walking from Thorndon to Khandallah), which means that it is very scenic, and very hard on the legs. The regional variations within Hungary are very noticable. Budapest was the seat of the Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and as such has very strong Western European influences, with a heavily dilluted Turkish infleuence for flavou [View Full Entry]
