so as usual, in my sometimes abundant times of nothingness, such as rotary meetings, school, walking, busing, and other random times i think about the usual things for an exchange student. one thing that comes up often is what im going to do when i go home, or what im going to eat, or what im not going to do and not going to eat. and i decided that the best way of being able to do/not do all of these great canadian things is to enlighten all of you so that MAYBE you will let me have my way for a week. i will probably add to this great list, but this is the beginnings...
-go on a cleanse. as much as i miss the great canadian food, i will give it up for a week in order to get rid of the lovely deep fried residue that now makes up 84% of my body mass. plus maybe my clothes will fit normally after that. lets not include this in the first week of me getting back. i need to over eat for the first week, then i will cleanse.
-eat a full turkey dinner. realize that i have missed 3 turkey dinners since i have been here and i deeply mourn the loss of these. so maybe we can make up for one.
-listen to a radio station in english that plays country music.
-drink a smoothie. kelsie i put you in charge of this.
-have real fruit juice. if i have not told you about the juice here before, i will now-IF it does have any real fruit in it usually it is no more than 12%. unreal. even apple juice. if you have never tasted fake apple juice, i strongly advise against it.
-walk around in bare feet without getting told that i was becoming infertile because my ovaries were freezing.
-have a clothes dryer. i realize i might regret this once i realize that the lack of this is the only reason why i can still wear my jeans from canada, but it will be nice for sweaters
-take a shower in a stand up shower with a shower head mounted to the wall-here you shower in a bathtub without a curtain while holding the shower head in your hand
-eat as much peanut butter as i want without having to worry about rationing
-watch tv only to flip through the channels and hear english on every one.
-cookies. everything cookies.
-same with pie
-type on an english keyboard with all of the letters in their normal places, without keys like öüóúőéáűí
-eat crispy crunch and coffee crisp
-have a marshmallow roast
-be able to thoughtlessly eavesdrop on conversations
-not have to worry about range codes when borrowing dvds from other foreign friends
-heinz ketchup and mustard-on everything
-CHEDDAR CHEESE!!!
-use a bathroom that has the sink, shower and toilet all in one room
-be able to drive and have friends who drive
-have pancakes and eggs with maple syrup and have that be normal
-eat whole grain bread
-eat berry everything!
-watch undubbed tv shows
-jay walk and not feel like my life is on the line.
-permanently forget my international calling card number
-waffles, lots of waffles
-have a cupboard full of different kinds of cereal and be able to eat five bowls without thinking of rationing
-not have to introduce myself as, "hi Im from Canada and my name is Jessica"
-be able to think of the Rotary 4 D rules (no Drinking, Driving, Dating, or Drugs) and only laugh because I dont have to be worried about getting caught. All of us Exchange students know that the real rules are Do it, Dont get caught, Do it again, Deny it. Rotarians, this is purely hypothetical
-not have to depend mostly on the computer for connection with the english speaking world.
-Go shopping for CDs that I am familiar with
-not have to quickly convert currencies in my head when shopping
-be totally ignorant of the dollars value in relation to other currencies
-have a bbq
-be able to call anyone in Canada before 5 in the afternoon
-have a birthday party!!
-go to a chiropractor
-have kleenex in a box, here most of the tissue comes in the little travel packs, you can buy these tissues in bulk but then they are in a big bag, but folded just like the travel pack ones.
-not use a key to get into my house. To get into my first host house I needed five keys. One for the gate, one for the "screen" door, and the other three for the main door.
-be able to cut across peoples yards because they dont have huge high fences that border their entire property
-have a slushy
-take short cuts down back allies. no back allies here. they're really missing out
-have the emergency number be 911. i dont know the emergency number here, i think i have it saved in my phone somewhere, but in case of an emergency Im not going to have time to search through my phone directory!
-have the ground floor of a building count as the FIRST floor, this one sure messed me up at first here, always went to the wrong floor
-kraft dinner. that simple. a meal in a box
-and i know that i dont eat much of it, but alberta beef. Hungarian beef is gross. And for things like spagetti and tacos, you need good beef
-spaghetti and tacos
-tortilla chips and salsa. salsa
-making tea in a tea pot.
-since I dont drink coffee-watching people make coffee with water and not milk! and using real coffee instead of instant.
-rice crispies
-not worry about writing a travelblog and trying to make it sound exciting!
