The food hasn't really improved. What they like best over here is lukewarm pork or turkey done in various styles, with pickled cabbage and dumplings. I make a mental note to tell Zoltan to get himself out here: he's looking for a girlfriend, and the girls of Eger are stunning. (Bridget adds that he could smarten himself up a bit, starting with that grey fleece he wears all the time.) Yesterday, as we started our walk at the little station of Egeresvolgy-Varrohaz, one member of our party spotted a sign saying Beware Of Wolves. Later, in the woods, we came across some still-tended war graves, one of them that of Horst Orstenburg who was pursued and killed by the Russians in 1944. Apparently the nearby town of Miskolc was an important centre for Nazi armaments production. ... read more

After a few days relaxing in Eger we headed for the Bukk national park, about 20km north east of Eger. We've enjoyed keeping fit and excercising in the outdoors on this trip and after a few days of relaxing we are always eger to get back to the countryside for some hiking or cycling. We stayed at a great campsite in a lovely rural village called Borsodbota. It was run by a dutch man named Gert, and his wife. A lot of the campsites in Hungary seem to be owned by dutch or germans. Gert was very helpfull with information on the local area and intresting to talk to about eastern europe as he has been travelling here for 30 years and living here for the last few. Strangely enough, these three uneventful days rate among the best I have had so far. Feeling adventurous and fit (read: despereate to get out of Eger and a looming marriage), I sauntered further east to Szilvásvárad, namely the Szalajka Valley. I was nervously eyeing the growling, grey, grimacing sky and inwardly self affirming (not into prayer) that today it would not rain! Why? I hear you ask, surely rain is good for the soil and the fertility of the lush green valley you are lazing about in? Why yes, she replied, looking somewhat chastised. But you see... my tent. It's not waterproof... with downcast eyes.
