Background: Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during World War I. The country fell under Communist rule following World War II. In 1956, a revolt and announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact were met with a massive military intervention by Moscow. Under the leadership of Janos KADAR in 1968, Hungary began liberalizing its economy, introducing so-called "Goulash Communism." Hungary held its first multiparty elections in 1990 and initiated a free market economy. It joined NATO in 1999 and the EU in 2004.

We left Slovenia driving through Austria into Hungary. It was a pretty long day, arriving on the shores of Lake Balaton in Hungry a very beautiful lake were tourists flock to. We decided to go for a hotel break and found a great one on the shores of the Lake. We enjoyed a night of pampering, spa, sauna, pool and a room slightly bigger than that of the camper with a bathroom attached. We walked to a local restaurant to taste the local dishes and headed back to the hotel with extremely full tummies. [View Full Entry]

After arriving in another new city late on a Saturday afternoon, it was decided that Sunday would be put aside for sightseeing. As luck would have it, Sunday also turned out to be St. Stephens Day, a big national festival here in Hungary. St. Stephen was the first king of Hungary ruling from 997-1038. He turned the nomadic pagan tribes into an independent nation largely by converting everyone to the church. He was made a saint on Aug 20 1083 (hence the date of the holiday) after some miracles occured at his gravesite. When he was removed from his original grave, [View Full Entry]

After the 3 hour bus ride into Budapest, we quickly made our way to Deli Pu. which was our train station. Having some time to kill and it being dinner time, we quickly ran across the road to order a take away pizza for the journey. It took longer than expected and we were almost going to run off without the pizza but it came just in the nick of time! When we arrived in Siofok it was after midnight and we soon realised the directions to the hostel were pretty average. To make things worse we got a major bum [View Full Entry]

The Reminder

Europe » Hungary » Lake Balaton
Hungary was one of the first Eastern European countries to break free from the Soviet communist administration. The openness factor in addition to a wide variety of sights, a fascinating history, and a comparatively cheap (although it probably caught up pricewise since then...) market helped getting the attention from Germans, Scandinavians, Austrians, Americans, and other tourists who were bored with the regular sites in Western Europe, or maybe those who were interested in really getting their money worth during the vacation. Budapest is the obvious magnet with all that a large and old Europ [View Full Entry]
