Background: Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during World War I. The country fell under Communist rule following World War II. In 1956, a revolt and announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact were met with a massive military intervention by Moscow. Under the leadership of Janos KADAR in 1968, Hungary began liberalizing its economy, introducing so-called "Goulash Communism." Hungary held its first multiparty elections in 1990 and initiated a free market economy. It joined NATO in 1999 and the EU in 2004.

..."Let's go racing boys," as NASCAR would say. Since my first blog entry, I've travelled to Hungary for my two days of Porsche Supercup testing with Lechner Racing at the Hungaroring Grand Prix circuit. Yesterday, we embarked on the eight hour road trip to Hungary from Austria, stopping on the way only to attend to a B-train truck that had literally taken a lie down across a six-lane highway and strewn cardboard boxes as far as the eye could see. We arrived at the track late in the evening and the team proceeded to set up while I met the other [View Full Entry]

The Ride

Hungary awaited us on our next leg of Eastern European travel. A short train ride from Bratislava got us to Budapest around 1pm and after checking into our hostel we started exploring the streets of Budapest. This is a very cosmopolitan city in comparison with the last 2 Eastern European capital cities that we have been in ... there is a ton going on and a places to eat and shop abound. People here compare it to the "Paris" of Eastern Europe, although we didnt see any crepe stands. Usually the places we have been staying are nothing out of the [View Full Entry]

What a difference a day makes! Our 5 days in Heviz were so relaxing and quiet after the busy bussle of being tourists in Vienna and Prague. The four of us just stopped and enjoyed a holiday in this small spa town at the end od Lake Balaton. If you haven't experienced a European Spa then it is a memorable thing to do if you ever get the chance. Heviz is famous as having the largest European hot spring lake (the biggest in the world in is Rotorua) and the whole town is devoted to providing for people who come to [View Full Entry]

Hey yall, Its me again. So much is to be said, We just got back from Budapest, Hungry for our weekend trip. It was definitely an experience. My week started Monday when I had to present my 10 min. long senior project on the book Hell's Angel, by far one of the easiest things in college. It was pretty dreary all week long with it raining all day, and clear at night. Wednesday we went on an adventure way out in Prague 9 to try and find go cart racing. We searched around for 4 hours to find the European Knauf [View Full Entry]

Budapest day 1-2 (June 28) This tour had begun the day before, and as I had spent some time in Budapest before I had opted to take a more convenient flight that had me join the group a day later. There was a note that had the details of when we were to leave the following day. I grabbed a nap before heading out to work the now familiar streets of Budapest. There was a festival around the chain bridge so I wandered through. The Danube had overflowed it’s banks and was full of debris from the rain that had occurred [View Full Entry]

Budapest: 19th - 26th June 2009 We made a list of impressions and topics for the Budapest blog when we got here: not expensive, it rained a lot, easy to bike around (contrary to what guide book says), etc. But, one subject took on a life of its own and overshadowed everything, and it started off with a short statement on the list: “Budapest is a very interesting city because it has been on the front line of the struggle between Islam and Christianity.” If you'll pardon the post-9/11 oversimplification, my observation was the result of learning that Budapest had [View Full Entry]

Budapest, Hungary is beautiful at night and it feels very much like Eastern Europe. Their local currency is the Hungarian Forinth and they tend to transfer money to the euro and then we translate it into dollars...which after all the math in your head, it was very expensive. The food was marginal at best so we relied on pizza for lunch and dinner. After 3 days of eating pizza we could not wait to board the plane to another city. We found out that the only people who eat out are the tourists and the locals never do so it was [View Full Entry]

Budapest at Night

Today was the start of our very long (24 hours) journey back up North to Munich in Germany. We started at 6am in Sarajavo and a 12 hour train journey to Budapest with no food apart from 2 bags of crisps, 5 mini twixs and a bottle of water oh and G with a slight touch of the runs!!!! Not good. As it happens the journey to Budapest went rather quickly and once we got into Hungary a restaurant cart got attached to the train, but with only enough money on us to buy one small sandwich we once again went [View Full Entry]

We have become used to easy and quick border crossings, even between countries who don't always get on, so it came as a bit of a surprise to spend over 2 hours making the crossing from Serbia to Hungary. The queue on the Serbian side was long but it paled into insignificance with the one on the Hungarian side. Luckily there was a toilet in the area between the control gates. No drama at all at the acutal gates. The Serbian people were friendly and relaxed and the Hungarians the same. The Hungarian customs checker - interested in grog, cigarettes and [View Full Entry]
