Budapest
Overlooking the Danube, with the Hungarian Parliament on the right bank.
We ended our transit tour by being unceremoniously dumped at the Budapest International train station at 11pm at night. It was deserted, there wasn’t a taxi in sight. What’s more, we had no local money. Thankfully we did manage to find a taxi reasonably quickly which whisked us of to our hotel for a long awaited stretch out and sleep.
Budapest is an interesting town, in that it’s actually the amalgamation of three separate cities. The two major ones, being Buda on the one side of the Danube, and Pest on the other (we forget the name of the third town, but it didn’t make it into the city’s name either). We spent our first day getting our bearings in the city of Pest, and stumbling across one of the most magnificent Christmas markets ever. And what’s a Christmas market without warm, mulled wine, to warm the hands in the near zero temperatures. We also took the opportunity to book Rachel in for a massage after being cooped up for two long bus trips.
The next day we went back to the streets of Pest to further explore, checking out some of the world heritage listed architecture. Of course,

Budapest
Beer Cafe and a Beef Club under the one roof... enough said.
what’s a stroll around Pest, without another couple of glasses of mulled wine at the Christmas market? By this stage, it was time for Rachel’s massage. Duncs went for a bit of relaxation of his own at a nearby pub.
Our final day in Budapest, we spent on the Buda side of the Danube. However, we were lucky to receive a clear skied day, with little snow (but it was still only 1 C). This allowed us to trek up the hill to the Buda old town, and explore the Palace, along with the old ancient streets. And then we went back to the Christmas market. Somehow, we kept ending up there!
Our next travels kick off early the following morning, with a trudge thru inch-deep snow and a snow shower as we made our way to the train station, and onto Prague.
See you in Prague,
Duncs & Rach.
