1. I have an apartment! Well, I might. Apparently it's being cleaned today and hopefully I get to move in tomorrow. I'll update when it actually happens. But supposedly it's on the Buda side near a huge square, which makes a pretty easy commute to work.
2. I'm teaching first grade plus second grade music and PE. Again, supposedly. The schedule is STILL not finalized.
3. There are really cool fruits and vegetables in Hungary. I don't remember the names of them, but one is like a small oval plum that's super sweet, and the other is indescribable but tastes like a mix between cauliflower and cabbage in that it's sweet but has a nice little spice at the end. SO GOOD. Shopkeepers are nice and let me, Tiffany, and Daniel try them for free.
4. There is a man from Frankfurt in my hostel room and he wakes up screaming at night.
5. The escalators in Budapest are terrifying. You kind of have to jump onto them because they go so fast, plus they're really long and steep, so there's always this feeling that if you lean backwards a little too far...
6. The immigration
office in Budapest is way more efficient than any DMV ever.
7. You know how in America, if you catch someone staring at you, they usually look away? And vice versa. Basically, rule is "rude to stare." Yeah. That's not a thing here. The guys like staring and the girls enjoy being stared at. So imagine my comfort level when I was on the metro riding home from school and a man sitting across from me just stared at me the whole time without shame. Awesome.
8. Speaking of the metro, I've pretty much figured it out! How awesome am I?!
9. Bacon potato chips are delicious.
10. I know how to buy a monthly transportation pass. I had help today from Neil, the tech guy at my school, but now I can do it in the future all by myself!
11. Budapest is where Prezi and the Rubiks cube were invented. It is also where Katy Perry's video "Firework" takes place (way more awesome now that I live here).
12. Plus Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks...blah.
13. I think Ikea might be my favorite thing this weekend while I move in. So
I guess it doesn't really fit on this list because I don't know that for sure...
14. I am freaking tired. Oh my god.
15. Budapest has giant markets filled with fresh produce, meat, and cheese. No one speaks English. It's the coolest.
16. And I know a little more Hungarian. Enough to ask directions when I got lost on my way to school today. I was so proud of myself for taking 2 metros and the bus (which I did totally illegally because I didn't know where to buy a ticket and the bus driver didn't know English. Thank god there were no inspectors on the bus (I have tickets now)). Then I got off the bus and had no idea how to walk to school. But between my powers of memory, my very little Hungarian, and lots of pointing, I found my way.
17. They have Hungarian Catan. Oh yeah.
18. Apparently there are a lot of mushrooms that grow here?? Thankfully, the market has about 5 cases of mushrooms that tell you which mushrooms will kill you, which ones you can cook with, and which ones you can't cook with. You can't
cook with the purple ones, but they won't kill you either.
Siya! (That means hello and goodbye, colloquially. Kind of like aloha. Pronounced "See ya!"
