Background: Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during World War I. The country fell under Communist rule following World War II. In 1956, a revolt and announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact were met with a massive military intervention by Moscow. Under the leadership of Janos KADAR in 1968, Hungary began liberalizing its economy, introducing so-called "Goulash Communism." Hungary held its first multiparty elections in 1990 and initiated a free market economy. It joined NATO in 1999 and the EU in 2004.

I'm finally in Budapest...but let me tell you what it took to get here. First of all, let me say that too many going away parties and too little sleep, along with getting my last vaccination shot all combined to make me feel under the weather for my flight to London. The time zone switch also did me in a bit, as they had already changed to daylight savings time, so instead of arriving at 9am their time(4am Toronto time), it was 10am. I ended up landing in Gatwick, which I had forgotten about, but it was no big deal. As [View Full Entry]

Hey Guys, Well budapest was a blast, we had a great time. there were good times and bad. We stayed in a double room in the Golden Eagle Hostel in their only double room, which was very very nice compared to our other accommodation we had stayed in previously. It was over 100 yrs old and built by a communist man who built it for his family with entertainment areas and dancing halls. There was also a statue on the ground floor made of gold they think it was for his wife. Off course when the capitalist took over it was [View Full Entry]

I woke up for a jog because the sunlight streaming in through the window was beckoning me outside. Since we were scheduled to have dance practice that evening I wasn’t sure if I would have another chance to enjoy the gorgeous weather. After I returned and had breakfast, we met in Dora’s living room to start practice. Before we started Kaspars K handed me a note and told me to read it to the team. The letter had a list of tasks we had to perform as a group. Each task was assigned to a particular person and was attached to [View Full Entry]

After the last concert in Czech Republic around 10 pm we decided to go ahead and drive to Budapest. That way we wouldn’t have to waste a whole day traveling but instead have a day off. Finally we would be united with our wonderful teammates, the beautiful Karoline and Dora!!! Dora is from Budapest and her family graciously opened their house to all nine of us. We arrived around 2:45 am to hugs and kisses from the girls then went straight to bed. The next morning Karoline and I went to a café at a nearby shopping center for a much [View Full Entry]

Jó napot from Hungary! I´m technically back in Spain already, but since I wrote this while in Hungary, I´m keeping that as the location. Besides, it breaks up the monotony of putting in MADRID in every entry. If you didn´t already gather, this past weekend I went to Budapest to do some sightseeing and general touristing activities. I have to say that I have never in my life had such a pleasant travel experience...ever. Everyone was super friendly and helpful, from the airport employees who helped me find my bus up to the waiters who suggested their favorite dishes and places [View Full Entry]

A weekend in BUDAPEST

 Europe » Hungary » Budapest
Last weekend I went to Budapest which was awesome. I went with 6 other girls, which was fun except to big when we had to a taxi. About half the people from my program went to Budapest (like 50 people). So when we were waiting at the train station on the way there because the train was delayed there were at least a group of 30 CIEE kids. (some people took different trains). Then on the train ride back when we were kicked out of the train and out of the station because of the bomb threat there were about 50 [View Full Entry]

Sorry for the long hiatus, but most places we go only have one computer and there is always a long wait. Besides, we have really been enjoying meeting people and planning our days instead of surfing the web. Bret posted an updated entry yesterday at www.travelblog/bloggers/honest-abe. So, that should give you an idea of what we have been up too. Since last time we have been to Warsaw, Cracow, Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. This afternoon, we are taking a night train to Venice. And will be in Italy for awhile (Venice, Florance, Rome, Pisa for two hours, and then Torino for [View Full Entry]
